#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 5: Someone named Scott for #NationalScottDay

Despite its sensationalist pulpy title and #ColdWar premise, Jack Arnold's adaptation of the #RichardMatheson novel is an existentialist treatise.

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) plays with the understanding of what it means to be acknowledged as a human, and one's place in the world. The story is told through the eyes of the titular Shrinking Man – Scott Carey – who after being exposed to strange fog, finds himself increasingly lost in this world.

It's phenomenal and I can only recommend it.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 6: a main character wearing a dress for #NationalDressDay

“[…] in the ballroom circuit, it is so obvious that if you have captured the great white way of living, or looking, or dressing, or speaking - you is a marvel.” –Pepper LaBeija

Paris Is Burning (Jennie Livingston, 1990) is probably best known for its fabulous #ballroom and #vogue-ㅤing scenes but in its heart, it tells the story of #family, of people who found their new ménage where they can live and love without fear and prejudice. While you may expect a fierce #documentary about #TransRights, or maybe merely a glamorous parade, you will be confronted with the flagrant #racism that made the #BallroomScene so essential for the Black and #Latinx #LGBT+ (comm)unity who founded it. And the tragedy of its demise in the name of pop culture even more heartbreaking.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 7: a town meeting for #NationalTownMeetingDay

Raymond Rouleau's Les sorcières de #Salem (FR/GDR, 1957) – , with a screenplay by Marxist philosopher Jean-Paul #Sartre – is a very early #film adaptation of Arthur Miller's 1953 #TheatrePlay The Crucible. An allegory of #McCarthyism, the play is a (partially dramatised) retelling of the #SalemWitchTrials, a dramatic episode in early US-American history. During several court and town meetings, 200 people were falsely accused of meddling with the Devil; 19 of them were eventually executed.

Miller himself was accused of un-American activities in 1956 and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to identify others present at meetings he had attended. Which doesn't mean that #WitchTrials are a thing of the past. As easily one can transplant Puritan religious mass hysteria to 1950s McCarthy anti-socialism, as easy is it applicable to the state of the world today.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 8: a #movie shot in #Oregon for #NationalOregonDay

For authenticity reasons, Clyde Bruckman and Buster Keaton's The General (1926) was – for the most part – filmed on location in Oregon. Set during the #AmericanCivilWar, it's a comedic retelling of a popular war memoir about the #GreatLocomotiveChase.

Sadly it was a box office #flop, resulting in Keaton losing his independence and The General entering the #PublicDomain as early as 1954. Luckily for us that means we too can enjoy the views of beautiful 1920s Oregon: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=YWm587wKKVw (note: this version has the appropriate piano score but appears to be a missing few minutes).

#film #TheGeneral #SilentFilm #ClydeBruckman #BusterKeaton #MarionMack #SilentCinema @film

The General (1926) - Original piano score by William P. Perry (BluRay Quality, full movie)

A complete and remastered version of this movie was released on BluRay by Kino International in 2009. It featured scores by Carl Davis, Robert Israel and Lee Irwin. However, there exists a piano score composed by William P. Perry which was done over a different copy of the movie which seemingly was in worse conditions, with many lost frames and changes in the order of the scenes. There are certain scenes -e.g. when Anabelle talks to the Northern Generals in the house- which were lost. This version of the movie was released on DVD by various companies. I wanted to enjoy the BluRay remaster and Perry's score at the same time. Nevertheless, the differences between the two versions of the movie would make this impossible without a full adaptation of the high definition release. In order to do so, I had to make a frame-by-frame comparison of both sources to have them match in length. AviSynth helped me do this without having to shoot my head. It was a lot of work, though: I splitted manually the movie into 300 small parts, making sure each scene started in the same frame for both versions. I also changed the order some scenes appeared in to make them match. Finally, I obtained the high definition version with the proper length. The thorough work allowed it to be automatically synchronized with the music. Finally, the video was upscaled to 4K for better bitrate preservation. Otherwise, the stunning quality of the remaster would be completely destroyed by YouTube. This is the craziest thing I have ever done on my computer, though: due to the source being a 1080p BD (therefore, with great bitrate, not like the YouTube crap), the computational requirements were very high. So high, that I could only perform the encoding with the minimal compression; if I didn't, the encoder would crash due to lack of memory. This ended up with a 188 GB, 350 Mbps gigantic video. After discovering the limit for uploading to YouTube is 128 GB, i had to reconvert it with higher compression. This second processing, though, was much more affordable. So, after more than 24 hours of encoding, I managed to downgrade it to 32 GB. My FTTH connection did the rest of the work.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 9: Someone going potty for #WorldKidneyDay

“Madrid was filled with the stench of – pardon my language – food. It was indecent.”

Eating is taboo, and relieving oneself is performed on a toilet at a communal table in Luis Buñuel's Le fantôme de la liberté [The Phantom of Liberty] (FR/IT, 1974). Le fantôme strings together events from #Buñuel's life (he was 74 by the time he made this film), with dreams remembered by both Buñuel and co-writer Jean-Claude Carrière. The title references the opening sentence from Marx/Engels' Communist Manifesto. What follows is a wonderful, free-flowing pastiche performed by a sublime cast.

not the #film that won the first grand price at that first #Oscar night in 1929, F.W. Murnau's Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927).

Sunrise was bestowed the award for “Best Unique and Artistic Picture”. The first and last time that ever happened; in 1930, the price was scrapped and replaced by “Outstanding Picture” aka “Best Picture”. And that one went to the much more American-patriotic Wings.

Also rightfully awarded in '29 were Janet Gaynor (Best Actress in a Leading Role), Charles Rosher and Karl Struss (Best #Cinematography), while Rochus Gliese was nominated for Best #ArtDirection.

Sunrise is a fantastic tour de force, and it winning that award should make you feel hopeful for the future of cinema. Instead, the current list of nominees and winners is, at least to me, a checklist of what to avoid for ever.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge March 21: Countdown on #NationalCountdownDay

[SPOILER WARNING BELOW]

#Peace, little girl aka Daisy aka Daisy Girl was the #PoliticalAd campaign to end all ad campaigns. It opens innocently enough with a little blonde girl, picking the petals of an ox-eye #daisy while counting. When the final petal's gone, the tone changes completely*

This deceptively simple #propaganda #film was made in support of Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 presidential campaign by ad agency #DBB and media consultant #TonySchwartz. It was so effective and bleak in is insinuations that the Johnson campaign was forced to pull it after only one screening.

What fascinates me is the similarity with one particular scene from James Whale's Frankenstein (1931). The Monster (#Karloff) meets a little girl who sits on the shore of a lake, picking daisies. He approaches her, and the girl, knowing the creature is a good man at heart, invites him to play a game with her involving them tossing the daisies into the lake. <spoiler>When they run out of daisies, the Monster picks up the girl who to him is as pretty and innocent as a flower, and throws her into the water.</spoiler>.

This scene was cut and considered lost until the 1980s. Could Tony Schwartz have been aware of that scene? He was at the right age to have seen the pre-code, pre-cut version.

People, buildings and gadgets interact with and against each other, each and everyone as plotless as a prop. In unison, it becomes a perfectly orchestrated symphony of maddening modernism. In 1925, René Clair released Paris qui dort. An #Eiffel Tower watchman wakes up to find the world around him asleep. The few ones still awake – the bright, pretty, carefree things – explore, live and loot.

All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl. Or a girl with a glue gun. Or skip the girl, get yourself a piece of cardboard, some foam latex, and a six pack of beer. Frank Grow's Red & Rosy (1989) is the embodiment of a special staple of #DIY culture that appears to be long-lost. Really kids, you don't need much of a budget. Or tomorrows latest equipment. The hottest Hollywood hotshot? Forget about it, ask your drunk uncle to yell at the camera for 10 minutes. You want authenticity? Tape some random medical footage straight from your teevee. #Bales2023FilmChallenge April 2: a #movie that takes place out in nature on #NatureDay

Two American families, adults and their children, go on a #HikingTrip in the south of #France. They find themselves increasingly lost, not only in #nature but also in and among themselves.

Supposedly based on a real troublesome event and riddled with much #film-making adversity, Raúl Ruiz's O Território [The Territory] (1981) nearly stranded as much as the hikers did. In support, Wim Wenders used the same cast for his Der Stand der Dinge (1982), about a film crew's attempt to remake Roger Corman's Day the World Ended (1955). In a wonderful, unscripted circular way, Corman was one of the executive producers of O Território.

With the dark absurdity of coming out of fascism and having to run a real-world country with a naive ineptitude – represented by the too-large-borrowed-from-father-suits – and pretence childlike bureaucratic procedures, Ermanno Olmi's Il posto [The Job] (1961) is a wonderfully sharp observation of #postwar #Italy.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 4: Rats in a movie on #WorldRatDay

NOTE no screenshots because I cannot post any content illegal in Germany. However, I do believe it is a must to study any film of far-reaching significance, no matter how repulsive.

I took a long time considering what to nominate for today's topic. This is not an easy one. And frankly, barely qualifies as as film.

In the 1930s, three films (2 British, 1 American) portrayed Jews in a positive light, as victims of persecution through history. When in 1938 the Novemberpogrome took place in (Nazi-occupied) Germany (the term “Kristallnacht” is a horrible euphemism and I won't use it), media was not unanimously jubilant about it. Understanding that violence is not the way to popular consensus, plans were made to change people's thinking about the Jews, using widely available visual media (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazism_and_cinema). In 1939, the faux #documentary Der ewige Jude [The Eternal Jew], directed by the leader of Goebbels' #propaganda film department Fritz Hippler, started production. Scenes shot in Jewish ghettos in occupied Poland were intercut with real, but out-of-context documentary footage, giving it a false sense of authenticity.

A returning theme in Der ewige Jude is disease. Not merely to suggest “the Jew”'s unclean life and religion, but as a synonym of people as a vermin, a parasite to decent (read: Aryan) society. In a horrible demonstration of the Kuleshov Effect, footage of a large group of #rats coming out of a sewer is followed by a crowd of Jews in the Łódź Ghetto, filmed without their consent or knowledge of where this footage would end up. The voice-over states:

"Where rats appear, they bring ruin by destroying mankind's goods and foodstuffs. In this way, they spread disease, plague, leprosy, typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, and so on. They are cunning, cowardly and cruel and are found mostly in large packs. Among the animals, they represent the rudiment of an insidious, underground destruction – just like the Jews among human beings."

Do remember that, whenever you hear or see comparisons made between people and disease, or people and rats. Let's not just never forget, but always remember and never repeat.

The one that got bombed by Strangelove.

Both Lumet's Fail Safe and #Kubrick's #ColdWar comedy came out in 1964, right after the #CubaCrisis. The world was awash with the realisation that the bomb, The Bomb, wasn't merely proverbial flexing. And when crisis happens, there are two options. One is to laugh, the other is to grasp. Sadly for Lumet, and the world, his Fail Safe was released while everyone was still too busy chuckling.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 6: Someone is rejected on #SorryCharlieDay

A scandal, that's what it was! In the late 1960s, Peter Fleischmann picked the picturesque Catholic village of #Landshut as the backdrop for Jagdszenen aus #Niederbayern, the #film adaptation of Martin Sperr's #TheatrePlay with the same name.

A young man named Abram – played by Sperr – returns to his family village. Soon the townspeople's thorns move from the in their eyes other disgraceful villagers to the much-needed mechanic.

Where did he return from? He was in prison. What for? For being a homosexual. He's a #Drecksau (a dirty pig), his mother says. The village whore can't turn him around. A sow is slaughtered in real time in celebration of a successful #harvest and plans for the town's future are forged.

While created when West Germany's #Paragrafen175 was in place [1872–1994], illegality of same-sex relations], the homosexual aspect wasn't the main cause of the outrage. Some of the Landshutter villagers who played alongside the professional actors felt they were depicted as being backwards. This isn't a movie about hunting, sigted some. Lifting the veil of the prevalence of, a #Fernweh in a sense, *that* Germany (hush) was another.

Catholic Mass is a theatrical re-enactment of the life and suffering of the son of God. When rites outstay their meaning, when invocations turn routine, the worshippers lose sight.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 7: A #television production in a #movie on #PublicTelevisionDay

The global TV audience of #Mondo-Vision, a live broadcast #TimeTravel experiment, determines through their emotional investment in the lead's screened experience what the man's destination will be. Even so, the spectators' collective energy should serve as a powerhouse, enabling a televised leap into the future. The man whose faith determines it all is Terence Stamp – played by the actor with the same name. He agrees to partake in the hope that enough emotional energy can be harvested for him to travel back in time so he can reunite with his lost love.

While definitely taking a cue or two from Resnais' Je t'aime, je t'aime (1968), Jérôme Laperrousaz's Hu-Man (1975) has a much grimmer feel to it. The seventies were not a time of or even for optimism, including Stamp's career and personal life. Noun Serra's dizzying editing and the real-world danger both the in-movie actor and real-world actor are exposed to makes Hu-Man a much more self-referential and personal experience for this future's reality-fatigued viewer.

Warren Beatty plays Mickey, a #StandUpComedian who has it all, then gambles it all away. Well, that's the first 5 minutes of Arthur Penn's Mickey One (1965). Beatty is out of his element, and the movie's still too indebted to the cheery 60s to carry that New American Cinema grit. Europeans are not too worried about certain things. Having a body for instance is something good. Instead of shame, you take care for it with regular exercise and plenty of fresh air. Preferably both. In Germany this is called #Freikörperkultur, sometimes confused with nudism.

In 1925, Wilhelm Prager released his Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit – Ein Film über moderne #Körperkultur [Ways to Strength and Beauty], showing the human in various stages of exercise and undress. We see sportspeople – including future-Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller and then-movie mountaineer Leni Riefenstahl – world leaders (Rockefeller and Mussolini, though the latter was cut from re-releases) and dancers such as Josephine Baker, Bac Ishii, and the scandalous Anita Berber. The film was mostly aimed at women, who by then were part of the workforce, sitting at desks in modern Metropolises. So modern it was that people were encouraged to complete their Wege-collection of trading cards, which came with their cigarettes. Good thing they're all #outdoors.

Juanito, a #Mixquic boy with hypersensitive hearing finds solace from the hustle of #MexicoCity in the silence of the chinampas – the pre-Hispanic man-made agricultural plots in lake #Xochimilco. There he plays his cardboard fiddle for the nature around him, until the sound from a real violin reaches him. The violinist, an old hermit who lives on one of the #chinampas, takes the boy in and teaches him how to master his hand-built instrument Yanco. When the man dies, the boy goes out at night to be able to play Yanco. In a changing world where the living and the dead used to naturally cross paths, the strings stir different to some.

The #Nahuatl film Yanco (Servando González / Mohy Quandour, 1961) is a small cinematic miracle that begs for a beautiful restoration akin to how കുമ്മാട്ടി [Kummatty] (Govindan Aravindan, 1979) opened up the world to indigenous filmmaking.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 23: Step into my mad lab on #WorldLaboratoryDay

Dr. Tube (Séverin-Mars) invents a powder that distorts reality and promptly tests it out on some oblivious test subjects, who quickly can no longer recognise the world around them. The brilliance of La folie du Docteur Tube [The Madness of Dr. Tube] (1915) is its use of practical in-camera effects that makes us, the viewer, experience the hallucinogen. This little folly by the great Abel Gance features Albert Dieudonné in a small part, who later would again work with Gance in his Napoleon (1927), as Napoléon Bonaparte.

Now take a nice deep breath here (trust me, I'm a doctor): https://cinemathequefr.github.io/henri/film/48677-la-folie-du-docteur-tube-abel-gance-1915/

In his laboratory, Dr. Tube, a scientist, experiments with a powder that decomposes the light rays and, in so doing, alters the vision and the physical appearance of beings.

Also, this is one of the few (French) comedies from the time that I'm aware of with a Black character who is not a horrible racist stereotype or a white person in blackface. May I present: the professor's assistant! If you have any idea who he is, please let me know!

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 24: Screaming!! on #ScreamDay

One joyous day, Pvt. Wilhelm gave his dear life for movie geeks everywhere. The Gary Cooper (super duper!) #western Distant Drums (1951) is the origin of what's known as the Wilhelm scream. During a dramatic action scene, our dearly beloved private is hit in the thigh with an arrow. The bloodcurdling #scream was part of a sounds effect reel voiced by Sheb Wooley, known better for his 1958 rock n rolll novelty song “The Purple People Eater” than fighting off hostile natives. Later, other screamers popped up in anything from A Star Is Born (1954) to Reservoir Dogs (1992). And yes, even a long time ago. In a galaxy far far away.

Hitman Jef Costello (Alain Delon) coolly drives a #Citroën DS 21 to his garagiste (André Salgues), who routinely switches the license plates in a beautifully wordless, efficiently lit scene in Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï (1967).

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 26: An Australian in the lead on #HugAnAustralianDay

Skip the hugging. John Hillcoat's deeply unpleasant debut Ghosts… of the Civil Dead (1988) is based on the book In the Belly of the Beast (1981), a collection of excerpts of letters between prisoner Jack Henry Abbott and author Norman Mailer. True to the book's format, Ghosts consists of disjointed vignettes of monologues, #CCTV footage, title cards, and prisoners' phone calls. For the last 37 months, these filters inform the observer, the hypermodern #supermax Central Industrial Prison has been in permanent lockdown. The cast, a mix of professional actors and ex-cons, and the location, a clean factory-style hangar in the middle of the Australian desert, underscore the underlying raw brutality of the unfolding events.

The #industrial soundtrack is by Bad Seeds Nick Cave (co-writer and starring as Maynard), Mick Harvey, and Blixa Bargeld from when they were still closer to being birthday boys than morose crooners.

#Bales2023FilmChallenge April 27: #Morse code heard on #MorseCodeDay

Jean #Cocteau's Orphée [Orpheus] (1950) – here the mythological poet and musician is personified by Jean Marais – accompanies a fallen young poet transported to the Underworld by car. The car radio plays fragments of poetry, interrupted by #MorseCode. When back in this world, #Orphée obsesses over the lines of radical poetry he heard and returns to the car's radio to retrieve them.

Morse code and other industrial sounds serve as a soundscape for Cocteau's characters. They swerve in and out of it, sometimes fully aware of them (Orpheus himself is attuned to the #poetry to be found in emergency radio broadcasts), sometimes passing through like a mirage.

@12pt9 @film Zeman was fantastic. My favorites are On The Comet, and of course his version of Munchausen.
@12pt9 @film never thought of Kubrick when watching The Silence (which I really like and watched more than once). That is an interesting observation

@davidfm I honestly feel a bit bad about my tendency to find something unoriginal in something popular, but it does seem that Kubrick took a cue or two from this Bergman. Which is fine, both films cannot be compared. And I don't think Kubrick meant to take (if at all). The Silence is almost a diagram for a hotel stay.

Still need to watch the first two of this trilogy. Can't wait.

@12pt9 @film I picked "Harvey" for one of these awhile back, I think the challenge was "something is not what it seems" or similar.
