The Danse Macabre was an important artistic tradition in the Late Middle Ages. Churches and other buildings were decorated with carvings and murals of dancing skeletons leading various people to the grave, including priests, nobles, labourers, children, and even kings and popes, thereby emphasising that death comes to all. This tradition may partly have its roots in epidemics like the Black Death, which turned people's thoughts to mortality. A similar obsession with morbid imagery seems to have arisen from the cholera epidemics of later times. While the medieval Danse Macabre was mainly an artistic tradition, people may have dressed up as corpses from various classes of society at village pageants and court masques, possibly providing origins for the costumes worn at Hallowtide. #MythologyMonday #folklore #gothic #art #history #mythology #medieval #death #weird
