"Pawòl Lakay is a complete first and second year set of Kreyòl materials designed for beginners and intermediate learners at the college level. It is the most comprehensive resource for the teaching and learning of Kreyòl available on the market. This textbook adopts a pragmatic approach to the teaching of language: emphasizing the value of communicative competence, functional language use, and conversational effectiveness. Pawòl Lakay takes into consideration the most recent research findings, new theories and methods in foreign language teaching. It is designed in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the ACTFL National Standards for Foreign Language Education. Pawòl Lakay meets the five 'Cs' of the national standards for foreign languages which are: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

Pawòl Lakay provides students with the opportunity to learn more than the Kreyòl language. Every chapter of Pawòl Lakay is made up of four lessons and a dossier with socio-historical and cultural information including Haitian proverbs. The dossiers provide substantial information on an aspect of Haitian culture and society related to the theme of the chapter. It allows students to explore in greater depth the topics taught in the chapter while promoting cultural analysis and cross-cultural comparisons."

This book is the answer to a lie.
The lie is that there are no political prisoners in the United States.
The truth, as reflected in these pages, is that U.S. prisons hold almost 200 men and women jailed for their political acts. They are held because of their protests against racism, injustice, and imperialism. They come from almost every national and ethnic group. Some, like the former Black Panthers and Black Liberation Army militants, have been in jail almost as long as South Africa's Nelson Mandela before his release. Some were imprisoned for non-violent protests, some for armed action; some were out-and-out framed.
All share a profound commitment to resistance, and a deep belief in humanity. Their poems and stories, article and art works eloquently expose the human truth behind the official lie.

Yali’s Question is the story of a remarkable physical and social creation—Ramu Sugar Limited (RSL), a sugar plantation created in a remote part of Papua New Guinea. As an embodiment of imported industrial production, RSL’s smoke-belching, steam-shrieking factory and vast fields of carefully tended sugar cane contrast sharply with the surrounding grassland. RSL not only dominates the landscape, but also shapes those culturally diverse thousands who left their homes to work there.

"There has been much debate over recent years about the effect of the Atlantic slave trade on Africa, with some authorities claiming that there were huge figures involved, and that these set back Africa's development for many years. Other historians reach lower estimates of the figures involved in the Atlantic trade, and hence argue that the effects on the political economy of Africa were more limited. Had widespread slavery existed long before the growth of the European slave trade ? How important was the trans-Saharan traffic ?

Manzè Yvonne pran men nou pou l mennen n eksplore kijan fanm sa a imajine liberasyon sila a l ap ede pèp la akouche a."

"African Women is a study of the everyday struggles of women in East Africa to support themselves economically. The aim of these women is clear – to be more independent of men. One consequence of this has been their migration from traditional village society to the apparently less restrictive life of the city. Chistine Obbo’s book grew out of her research in Uganda and Kenya during the 1970’s. It portrays the attitudes of ordinary women – both villagers and those living in the cities – to their relationships with men. It presents a detailed picture of the multitude of ways in which these women earn their own living. And it shows the new more independent forms of relationships with men – as well as solidarity with other women – that they have built up."

The Agta Negrito people have been hunters and gatherers in the tropical rain forests of the Philippines for centuries. This book investigates a small group of the Agta living on Luzon Island during their transition from a foraging society to a landless group of agricultural workers.
The core of the book is a demographic study of fertility, mortality, and migration over a 44-year period. It is one of only two studies that have completely reconstructed the population dynamics of a foraging group without relying on mathematical models. Ethnographic and narrative historical sections of the book establish the contexts for the demographic data and enhance the study’s readability. As a case history of social and population dynamics in a remote frontier region, the work describes the impact of international commercial interests on both the rain forest and the landless peasantry seeking to survive.

Like all the great religions, Vodou has an external, public practice of rituals and ceremonies–and also an internal, mystical dimension. Before Nan Dòmi, works about Vodou have concentrated on the spectacular outward manifestations of Vodou observance–hypnotic drumming and chanting, frenetic dancing, fits of spirit possession. But practically all reports on Vodou are outsider accounts, which means that they are stopped at the threshold.
Mimerose Beaubrun, educated as an anthropologist, set out to write another such work, but in the process she met the woman who would become her ultimate teacher and guide to the religion’s internal mysteries: Tante Tansia, whose knowledge, wisdom and spiritual power govern the text of Nan Dòmi.

Nan Dòmi is the only account of Vodou’s private, mystical, interior practice that has been offered to the public so far. Its content stands in the same relation to ceremonial Vodou as Zen to conventional Buddhism, Sufism to conventional Islam, the practice of the desert saints to conventional Christianity. Mimerose Beaubrun has been a student of Vodou for half of her life, but she is also adept, and in this uniquely valuable work, she divests herself of all scholarly apparatus to speak from Vodou’s purest heart.
This English edition includes a fascinating introduction by Madison Smartt Bell, placing the religion and Beaubrun’s memoir in historical context.
