A brief history of jihad, slavery, and the Barbary pirates.

To my great detriment, I use #reddit. To my even greater detriment, I offer my expertise by engaging with r/asklinguistics. Boy do those people, including a mod, harbor a huge amount of animosity towards Mufwene, DeGraff, and their framework for #creoles that I've never seen any #creolist seriously take issue with. Post to clarify that creoles are born out of #slavery and expect to be run through the mill. I think today I give up on reddit. So many design problems.

Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission Sir Hilary Beckles (vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies) described the adoption by the 80th UN General Assembly of the Resolution designating the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans as the Gravest Crime Against Humanity, as a “historic, landmark decision.”

@AlexanderKingsbury So, I maintain that both modern #slavery and #colonialism are direct consequences of #capitalism. This is historically well-known. People like Christopher Columbus weren't nobility or state soldiers. They were private entrepreneurs (traders), who got the legal backing of the state, for their commercial endeavor. Slavery was run as private trade companies, with the authorization of their home-states and colonization was aimed at expending spaces for capitalist exploitation.

"The reason that Martin Marshall assembled his book was that he wanted white people to have a better understanding of how to continue oppressing enslaved people and then also steal their ways of survival and make them into “helpful tips and tricks” for white people."
This is being recognized & called out today in the #foodinfluencer culture. #TraderJoes is a modern day example.

@yaarur I hear you, I don’t believe in turning tragedy into a competitive sport. & here’s why I get its use in this case. It goes beyond the staggering numbers of 20-30+ million humans taken. It’s about a lack of understanding of how ever-present the cancerous effects of #African #slavery remain in our global societal structures, continuing to abuse, subjugate & sometimes kill, generations of people. Nothing less than a declaration like this could force global attention to this reality
