Philipp Stölzl inszeniert in seinem Film, nach der Novelle von Stefan Zweig, das Innere eines Mannes als Schlachtfeld und Ort der Zersetzung durch Macht. Die Geschichte kennen Sie vermutlich. In jedem Fall gehört die literarische Vorlage zum Kanon der europäischen Selbstbefragung nach dem Faschismus. Doch dieser Film interessiert sich weniger für die historische Spezifität als für die psychologische Verdichtung eines Ausnahmezustands. Das funktioniert leider nur teilweise.
