As Europe warms, Bewickâs swans are making much shorter journeys to ice-free wetlands and agricultural areas in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Poland â known as short-stopping.
About 60 swans are carrying GPS. Tracking data shows swans adjust their autumn journeys on a daily basis. On colder days, the birds travel bigger distances but if it is warm, they sometimes do not move at all.
