Here I study a question: "How to subdue people?"
I discuss sociology of communication, beliefs, entanglement, #adultism.
(I purposely do not propagate news.)

"The calamitous turning point of Israel's political culture occurred when the Zionist movement was taken over by the Russian political sect, particularly those from the Second Aliya (the 1904-1914 wave of Jewish immigration to #Palestine). Russian culture possesses noble aspects and achieved intellectual and cultural summits. But at the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th, Russia underwent dramatic political upheavals that engendered a brutal political culture that scorned tolerance and enlightenment."

Why rejoice in the misfortune of others

One way to feel my social status improving is if someone else lowers theirs. And so, when I see someone mess up in ways that cause them to lose face, and thus lose social status, I can feel a burst of satisfaction as my own status is raised, at no cost to me.

Rearmament is an opportunity for capital to obtain reductions in welfare and public services, at the cost of lower profitability.

Chatham House: “Politicians will have to brace themselves to reclaim money through cuts to sickness benefits, pensions and healthcare.”

Britain’s finance minister Rachel Reeves, who has been steadily cutting spending on child credits, winter payments for the aged and disability benefits, announced that the remit of the Labour government’s new National Wealth Fund would be changed to let it invest in defence.

From welfare to warfare: military Keynesianism

"Capitalism and extreme poverty: A global analysis of real wages, human height, and mortality since the long 16th century
[…]
• Data on real wages suggests that, historically, extreme poverty was uncommon and arose primarily during periods of severe social and economic dislocation, particularly under colonialism.
• The rise of capitalism from the long 16th century onward is associated with a decline in wages to below subsistence, a deterioration in human stature, and an upturn in premature mortality.
• In parts of South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, wages and/or height have still not recovered."

Capitalism and extreme poverty: A global analysis of real wages, human height, and mortality since the long 16th century

This paper assesses claims that, prior to the 19th century, around 90% of the human population lived in extreme poverty (defined as the inability to a…

In 1996, violence was denounced in the elite catholic school of his constituency. He made an official visit as both the then Minister of National Education and a member of the National Assembly for a seat in Béarn (the province of the school). He told the regional press: "The people of Béarn felt these attacks with a sense of pain and a sense of injustice. […] All the checks were favourable and positive."

#Screens "train us in convenience, which is training in predictability, in the facade of certainty. And when that facade inevitably breaks, we often find ourselves at sea.

"In the brilliant and ever-relevant Seeing Like a State, James C. Scott outlines the many ways states fail; principle among them is an obsession with putting things in order, with simplification and efficiency. More often than not, that efficiency translates into brittleness and weakness, into systems so fragile they break the moment something unanticipated arises."

During the later stages of World War II and until 1950, millions of Germans and German-speaking persons fled or were expelled from various Eastern and Central European areas. It was the largest transfer of any single ethnic population in European history.

The German population east of Oder-Neisse was estimated at over 11 million in early 1945. The first mass flight of Germans followed the Red Army's advance.

"I think this is something we often overlook - our bodies are incredibly intuitive. They know when something isn’t right - even if our brain is unaware and/or unable to accept it. That little voice in your head will niggle at you that you’re missing something, your gut will send out repeated warning signs begging you to pay attention.

"Gisele went to her doctors and explained her symptoms - and her husband went with her. He informed them that she was forgetful and perhaps experiencing signs of early onset dementia.

"Rather than speaking to Gisele on her own - the doctors allowed her husband to drive the conversation."

Gisele Pelicot, Medical Misogyny and How Disabled People Face Increased Risk of Abuse

Most of us have heard Gisele's story. It's a reminder that even men you trust can harm you. Did you know that she went to her doctors for help? A look at how medical misogyny contributed to her abuse.

#Antisemitism must be vigorously challenged as a pillar of Eurocentric white supremacy.
#Zionism is a specific political ideology and form of ethnonationalism that drove the establishment of the state of Israel and maintains the illegal occupation of Palestine.

"The primary goal of the IHRA definition is not to fight antisemitism or to protect Jewish communities from racist attacks, predominantly carried out by white supremacists; it is a mechanism to suppress advocacy for Palestinian rights. Of the definition’s 11 examples, seven deem criticism of Israel or Zionism to be antisemitic."

Colonialism, racism and the IHRA

In June 2024, after years of advocacy from Palestinian and Jewish families, the Toronto District School Board voted to include anti-Palestinian racism as part of its Combating Hate and Racism strategy. While many people saw this as long overdue, a number of pro-Israeli organizations almost…
