Israeli ministers celebrate re-establishment of Sa-Nur West Bank settlement

Sa-Nur is one of four former settlements in the West Bank approved by the Israeli government two decades after settlers were evicted.

Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Israel Katz have attended the official reopening of the Sa-Nur settlement in the occupied West Bank, nearly 21 years after the illegal settlement was evacuated in 2005.

“On this exciting day, we celebrate a historic correction to the criminal expulsion,” Finance Minister Smotrich said in his speech at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday, the AFP news agency reported. He said Israeli authorities were also “burying the idea of a Palestinian state”.

"Why are fears of permanent occupation growing?

Some analysts say Israel is seeking leverage ahead of future negotiations. Political commentator Abed Abou Shhadeh told Al Jazeera there appeared to be a new Israeli strategy, not only in Lebanon but also in Syria, aimed at consolidating power through territorial expansion.

“In any future negotiation, Israel would seek to hold on to this land and use it as leverage as much as possible,” he said.

Israel occupied southern Lebanon for years before withdrawing in 2000, while continuing to hold the Shebaa Farms area. It also continues to occupy the Syrian Golan Heights and Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank.

For many Lebanese, the “Yellow Line” raises fears that a temporary military zone could become a longer-term occupation under the cover of a ceasefire. As Israeli troops remain inside Lebanon and military operations continue, critics say the truce is a mechanism for legitimising occupation."

Fifa ‘negeert schaamteloos internationaal recht’

Mensenrechtenorganisaties hebben het besluit van de Fifa om niks te doen flink gekraakt. Fairsquare noemde de houding van de bond in deze kwestie ‘vanaf het eerste moment laf en niet oprecht’. Steve Cockburn, plaatsvervangend directeur van Amnesty International, zei dat de Fifa “faalt in het handhaven van zijn eigen reglementen en het internationaal recht op schaamteloze wijze negeert”.

Niet alleen Fairsquare en Amnesty stellen dat het klip-en-klaar is dat de Westelijke Jordaanoever Palestijns grondgebied is. Vorig jaar schreef een groep prominente academici, historici en juristen, onder wie hoogleraren internationaal recht, al een brief aan de Fifa over wedstrijden in Israëlische nederzettingen op de Jordaanoever. Volgens de ondertekenaars, onder wie ook Israëliërs, was er sprake van een illegale bezetting door Israël.

En dus hoefde de Fifa zich volgens hen helemaal niet bezig te houden met de precieze juridische status van het gebied, maar met de vraag of Israëlische clubs in nederzettingen door zouden moeten gaan met het spelen van wedstrijden.
