A doctor in child psychiatry says: "The abuser is capable of waiting to commit the act."
People scare the child by saying "Daddy's going to prison, and you wouldn't want that, because Daddy loves you so much".

"The legal system gives the benefit of the doubt to the aggressor and it's up to the child to provide proof..."
"You know full well that if you report a family that is deprived or in a precarious situation, you're more likely to be believed than if you report a family of teachers or doctors. It becomes a 'social problem' of poor people."

"28. Member States should instil a culture of the rights of the child and of responsibility of all professionals and adults in contact with children. Member States should consider systematically developing professional protocols and standards on child protection procedures and child protection safeguards, with the aim of ensuring that all organisations working for and with children have robust child protection policies and reporting mechanisms for situations of violence in place."

Alice Munro doesn't get to tell this story | Cognoscenti

Andrea Skinner, the youngest daughter of Alice Munro, shared an essay this week about being sexually abused by her stepfather. Speaking up doesn't come without pain and loss and years of work to recover from the violence she suffered and from her mother’s horrifying betrayal, writes Janet Chwalibog. What it does come with is courage.

All guilty, from age 26 to 74.

"Gisele went to her doctors looking for help - and they failed her. They had an opportunity to figure out what was happening to her - or at least involve the right people who COULD have figured it out.
[…]
"I think this is something we often overlook - our bodies are incredibly intuitive. They know when something isn’t right - even if our brain is unaware and/or unable to accept it. That little voice in your head will niggle at you that you’re missing something, your gut will send out repeated warning signs begging you to pay attention.

"Gisele went to her doctors and explained her symptoms - and her husband went with her. He informed them that she was forgetful and perhaps experiencing signs of early onset dementia.

"Rather than speaking to Gisele on her own - the doctors allowed her husband to drive the conversation."

Gisele Pelicot, Medical Misogyny and How Disabled People Face Increased Risk of Abuse

Most of us have heard Gisele's story. It's a reminder that even men you trust can harm you. Did you know that she went to her doctors for help? A look at how medical misogyny contributed to her abuse.

François #Bayrou is the current Prime Minister of #France.

In 1996, violence was denounced in the elite catholic school of his constituency. He made an official visit as both the then Minister of National Education and a member of the National Assembly for a seat in Béarn (the province of the school). He told the regional press: "The people of Béarn felt these attacks with a sense of pain and a sense of injustice. […] All the checks were favourable and positive."

The director of the institution, Pierre Silviet-Carricart, has been charged of the case of sexual assault. François Bayrou asked the investigating judge for a meeting at his place. The discussion was around the risks for the Bayrous' son, then a student at the boarding school. François Bayrou's wife attended the director's funeral in 2000.

At Parliament, on 11th February 2025, François Bayrou was representing the government for the weekly question-and-answer session. When asked about #Bétharram, he stated before the National Assembly that he had "never been informed of any violence, and even less of sexual violence".

Incest ‘is an issue of at least three persons within the family: there is the perpetrator, the victim, and the person who allowed the acts to be committed or repeated while they were known or revealed to him or her.’

It is difficult to accept that incest is the banal act of a completely ordinary person; and that it constitutes a genealogical crime, a specific form of child abuse (with control).
The impossibility of seeing incest as a criminal sexual practice was remarkably demonstrated in an ethnographic study carried out by Léonore Le Caisne in the provincial village where the Lydia Guardo case took place.
The villagers perceived the Guardos as completely ordinary, a family like any other, with a hard-working father who was respected and looked on kindly, even though he did not hide his paternity from the villagers, shopkeepers and institutions. For the villagers, bound together by gossip, incest was a banal matter of procreation between a man and his daughter: ‘he was making children to his daughter’. They failed to see the asymmetrical relationship of kinship and age that constitutes this paternal incest: behind the gossip, the criminal practice of incest was passed over in silence

#abuse #control

‘Each person is […] bound by different moral commitments towards the aggressor – depending on the position held and the relationship with one or the other’.

‘In the extended family, friendship and professional circles within which incest is reported, some, now adults, have obviously themselves been victims of abuse, others have been or still are abusers. In the vast majority of cases, these incestuous acts, whether suffered or imposed, have not been reported to the courts or made public. These incestuous acts are also known to others, who talk about them, have talked about them or will talk about them in the future. Circles of acquaintance and gossip intersect.’

@estelle @patriarchy whilst I totally agree with the articles content, I think this is a problem of the domination system in which we exist. We need more partnership working and an end to #patriarchalcapitalism the two elements are inseparable and maintain the warped status quo running the whole of society. We have to look more at systems and the bias and control they produce. Leadership has to change and how we define has to be part of that change.

@Herefordrob
Excuse my confusion:
a. Would you suggest that looking for hero figures is not your preferred strategy?
b. Would you mean that we should subaltern/deprioritize going to mainstream media?
c. Are you saying that people need civil society as opposed to institutions?

@patriarchy

@estelle @patriarchy
I apologize for maybe not fully understanding your questions.
a. Role models (hero figures?) are an important aspect of education which is essential for the inner transformation needed to develop true #equality & #Justice.
b. Information needs to be obtained from a broad base including "mainstream" a new #education system is needed for the individual to critique information.
c. Institutions as authorities need to be guided by civil society.
These are very short answers.

@Herefordrob

Thank you. You answered perfectly.
