There is a lot of criticism in Germany directed at privacy protection, known as Datenschutz.

The idea behind it developed after World War Two, when the Nazis used centrally stored administrative data to identify and round up political enemies, including Jews.

Now compare this to the United States, where this historical experience is not the same. Authorities there more readily access large amounts of data to determine who is considered an enemy.
