During the later stages of World War II and until 1950, millions of Germans and German-speaking persons fled or were expelled from various Eastern and Central European areas. It was the largest transfer of any single ethnic population in European history.

The German population east of Oder-Neisse was estimated at over 11 million in early 1945. The first mass flight of Germans followed the Red Army's advance.
