Kick out rapists even if they're your comrade, colleague, friend, sibling. Getting a free pass from their family and social circle is what emboldens them to build up their sense of entitlement the way they do.

Most rapists could not rape without the support they receive from their community. No one thinks they support rape (not even rapists), but everyone supports rapists. It's an easy habit to break once you become more aware of it.

One of the insidious things of rape culture is how even genuine allies, subconsciously, see us victims as burdens. We see ourselves that way anyway.

But we're not burdens. We're not a problem you have to deal with when we disclose the rapist's crimes. That's how the rapists see us.

Yes, they are that distorted in their thinking. It stems from their incredible entitlement, not confusion or mental illness. They exploit our emotional and physical labour, rip us off financially, parade us around to dress up THEIR public image (that's part of why abusers tend to be well liked) and whatever else they can think of. They use our bodies.

But we're BURDENS?! We're raw materials to them.

And we're pillars of our communities. We're fucked up and traumatised from what rapists and enablers do to us, but that doesn't mean we're weak or passive or more needy than giving.

Quite the contrary. A lot of us - and this is by no means universal and it SHOULDN'T BE - but a lot of us overcompensate against internal and external feelings/accusations of lazyness, stupidity and burdenhood by being extra helpful and undemanding. We're used to giving without taking.

It's hard to shake that. But on the other side lies a world of mutual aid and compassion and friendships that are built on actual equality and that are therefore even more fruitful than our previous efforts.

As communities and people, we can break the ball and chain that is rape, that is currently holding us back and making every move so much harder than it needs to be.

Das ist ein immer noch und für sehr lange Zeit notwendiger Aufruf. Ich lebte einige Jahr in einem Umfeld, in welchem rund 90% der Bewohner wegen sexualisierter Gewalttaten einsaßen (gemeint ist eine Abt. Sicherungsverwahrung in einer Haftanstalt8.

Die Spanne reichte von solchen die ehrliche Einsicht und Reue zeigten, über die Desinteressierten, bis hin zu jenen, die ihre Taten offen verteidigten.

So weit wir als Gesellschaft in vielen Bereichen gekommen sein mögen, was den gewaltfreien und nicht-übergriffige Umgang mit Flinta* angeht, leben wir noch in einer Wüste. Mich bewegt noch heute die Frage, was die Ursachen dafür sind, dass so viele, ai unzählige viele Männer sexualiserte Gewalt ausüben.
