Grim Reaper: Death's Solitude

@courtcan How was it? I'm looking into getting a copy of *Looking Awry* by Žižek.

More generally, I'm looking for like-minded folks who read/know Jacques Lacan and Lacan-adjacent writers and thinkers. 25 years ago, my French professor/mentor applied Lacanian theory to books, films, and...well, everything. I was/still am fascinated by it, and I want to expand my knowledge/grasp of it.

An interesting short essay on choosing the time to act:

Interesting enough that a lengthier exploration might be warranted.

Kairos: The ancient Greek art of knowing when to act

Wisdom isn't knowing what to do. It's about knowing when. The Greeks built a whole philosophy around learning the difference.

Big Think

The thread through all this? A feeling of aggrieved entitlement.

When we don’t have the critical thinking skills needed to listen to claims, identify who is making them, assess the evidence they’re based on & notice whose interests are served by the arguments presented, we are Very Vulnerable to manipulation through this feeling.

No wonder political parties of the white patriarchal supremacist right have been systematically defunding the institutions & disciplines that teach these skills.

People are not our enemy. Ignorance is.

‘I feel like I’m losing her’: the families torn apart by older relatives going far right

It starts with a ‘back in my day’ nostalgic meme – then suddenly your elders are sharing AI-generated ‘boomerslop’ and repeating conspiracy theories …

Data and information are never neutral. Seeing Like a State should be required reading for all statisticians, data scientists, and 'if you can't measure it, you can't manage it' cohorts. As I've mentioned before, stats is tossed into maths curricula despite being more about methodology; this talks about historicity.

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May [Shared]

Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered.

A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology, and the natural world, May's story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas.
