It seems to me the the bit about #Plasma #KDE in the #FreeBSD #Handbook Chapter 8. Desktop Environments could use some better phrasing:

To install the Plasma desktop with a basic set of KDE Applications, execute: pkg install kde
Additional KDE Applications are tagged with the kde-applications category.
To install a minimal Plasma desktop, execute: pkg install plasma6-plasma.
This installation is really minimal. The Konsole terminal emulator must be installed separately executing: pkg install konsole.
One would suspect that the plasma6-plasma option should be the minimal desktop session for the desktop environment. However, when I try it in a VM running 15.0-RELEASE-p4 with base #Xorg and #CWM installed, the pkg instak kde reported 541 new packages were to be downloaded and installed, while pkg install plasma6-plasma reported 572.

hot take, I feel xorg is here to stay despite its supposed technical flaws. i don't buy the propoganda that FDO is trying to "kill" it. they still maintain it, albeit with no new features, plenty of projects such as xenocara work with them and upstream fixes as need be. also, x11 is pretty dang featureful as it is tbh. besides, that enrico weigelt guy is certainly not "saving" anything considering his development track record.

Apparently #Ubuntu 24.04 LTS uses #wayland and that's why #XFCE isn't loading.

Ubuntu's Unity is just "meh." It's very much the Linux equivalent of the #Windows11 GUI.

Under #xorg, XFCE4 was my go-to but often times I'd also use #Openbox.

What more minimalist options can anyone recommend?

SSD not CSD

The nice thing about that period, is that everything was keyboard driven and the mouse was only used when it was handy. The great thing about that period, is that you could do everything literally everything with your keyboard and the user interfaces were much more simple to design, modify and to expand, because it was much easier for the programmers to determine what you want based upon the fact that you are using the keyboard as input.

It started to go downhill when the scrollwheel was added.

Three buttons were enough.

Everything degenerated to CSD, while SSD is the proper way to go, and we now have hacks to force SSD in different Linux distributions. Hopefully the BSD flavours have such hacks too

If you still want SSD as much as possible, you need to use fluxbox as your DM / WM and use the considerable tweaks that @rl_dane has suggested to me in another toot in this thread, get firefox to behave normally again. You should also disable all the silly LLM stuff in ffox...
