The other correct but unbelievable review someone mentioned was, "This review is just a list of their vehicles." Yeah, it kind of is a special effects show like that, and the special effect is the miniatures.
I did watch the TV series on DVD a while back, hadn't heard of the movie cut. Cutting up the 1970--1971 show for a 1980 feature would have been a wise use of the footage at the time.
Opening showing Ed Bishop/Straker being given the leadership role because it would take 10 years to build Shado, showing him berating the guy over the less-secure-fuel-request, then at the end the fishermen stumble into the undersea alien base (that has one of the most dreamlike sets in the show) seems like a good selection, but he finds out the aliens listen to his communications, can imitate them and have doppelgangers of the entire command staff.
How can he not be gutted by that failure? Also, he and the frogman, the other guy, "have to split up," the Shado person is separated by him, to journey back to "Skydiver" they momentarily become little toy people on skiffs and aren't even wet when they get into the base or the sub. Someone commented "Why isn't he fighting his double" while skydiver is wondering if they will have to launch torpedoes at the base, and him, and I think the answer is, with the cuts and missing moments and switches to toy frogmen and back you would have to have, I think every audience member would question if the real Straker ever got out of the alien base, and if the alien duplicate were controlling SHADO after that, I think that doubt would be a lot to take with you after three seasons of show or having the footage around for ten years.
I guess that it also makes sense for him to close by having probably the most personal interaction in the movie, relating the organ theft of a family member to the crewperson, too, it's kind of grounding.
