At a time when #GreatBritain faced no danger of food shortages while #India was in dire need of food imports, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1943 the vicious imperialist PM #WinstonChurchill ordered Indian Ocean shipping cut by 56%. The #BengalFamine was the result, with 3 million dead.

This is a quite extraordinary piece of misrepresentation. So far from being a demilitarised colony #india provided large numbers of volunteers for the #britishimperialforces in both world wars . The causes of the #bengalfamine are best set out by #amartyasen - who lived through it . Not enough was done quickly enough to avert it - and the problem was more to do with both a shortage of shipping worldwide and competition for food within the native population.

If after reading my posts in this thread, you are still doubtful that I know what I’m talking about when I speak of #Churchill, then you are not paying attention.

If you can’t comprehend the exigencies of a World War and cannot put the world security stakes in context when you talk about #BengalFamine, you are not worth engaging further.

I have repeatedly told you that it’s OK to disagree with me, but you seem bent on making me agree with you. #GFY

>> Even #BengalFamine was an exigency of War

I was born in #Bengal and lived there for a quarter century.

Even I know #Churchill did not use Bengal Famine as a weapon of war against Bengal like #Stalin used #Holodomor in #Ukraine, and like #Putin is using it now ➡️ https://www.reuters.com/business/putin-ally-warns-agriculture-supplies-could-be-limited-friends-2022-04-01/

Earlier, I said you are entitled to your opinon, and you are. But you should not distort historical facts to suit your opinion.

>>>> #Stalin still doesn’t get glory because #Soviets didn’t stop #Nazis because Soviets were suddenly “good.” They stopped Nazis for self-preservation after #Hitler betrayed them

>> And Churchill did not fight Hitler Germany for self-preservation?

Worst #bothSides on #WWII history I’ve ever seen 🙄

No #Churchill did not go fuck #Poland like #Hitler and #Stalin took turns to. He did not kill 6 million #Jews

@EdibleFuchsia @jonben Yes, I listened to that too. On the one hand, great that it was on at all, and it was interesting, on the other: i wish they had gone further with it. The choice to focus on lived experience rather than causes (!); the “balanced” discussion of Churchill (getting on only Hastings for that!); and, as ever, a lot of White Saviourism. And yes, as you say, only that one instance, not the wider picture. #Famines #BengalFamine #Colonialism

Three million British subjects died in the Bengal Famine during the second world war in India.

80 years on, Kavita Puri has recorded conversations with some of the last survivors of the famine. It's fascinating and moving.
