Crisis in Sudan: 19.5 million struggle with food insecurity

A global hunger monitoring group reported that over 40% of Sudan's population faces acute food insecurity through May. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification says nearly 19.5 million people are affected, with 135,000 experiencing extreme conditions, including starvation and malnutrition. The situation is expected to worsen during the June–September lean season. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed at least 59,000 people and displaced 13 million. Farmers are concerned about rising costs for fertilizers and fuel, exacerbated by the Middle East conflict. The IPC warns that 14 areas are at risk of famine if conditions deteriorate.
