The first #InternationalUnemploymentDay was observed on #ThisDayInHistory in 1930 in the US. Rallies & marches called by #communists took place in cities across the country. #Police were sent to attack the #unemployed workers but they fought back and gained relief in some cities.

#ThereIsPowerInAUnion, a classic #JoeHill song, was published on #ThisDayInHistory in 1913 in the #IWW's #LittleRedSongBook. It asked if you would "have wings up in heaven to fly" but "starve here with rags on your back". Hill was killed two years later by Utah for his politics.

The #MissouriCompromise was signed into law on #ThisDayInHistory in 1820 by Pres. #JamesMonroe. It aimed to uphold a delicate balance between slave & free states by admitting #Missouri with slavery, #Maine without it, & banning slavery in the rest of the #LouisianaPurchase lands.

The #SCOTUS decision in #DredScottVSandford, one of their worst, #ThisDayInHistory in 1857, is a bluntly #WhiteSupremacist argument. It declared that no Black person was, or ever could be, a citizen, regardless of where they were born or lived; all were, by rights, mere property.

In an act of state terror in #Gibraltar, #OperationFlavius, #ThisDayInHistory in 1988, British SAS agents killed three UK citizens for being members of #ProvisionalIRA. The gov. claimed the trio were planning a car bomb, but they were found to be unarmed, with no bomb ever found.

Desperate to break an alliance between rebellious Iraqi #Kurdistan & the shah's Iran, Iraq endorsed the #AlgiersAccord on #ThisDayInHistory in 1975. It dropped Iraq's claim to Khuzestan Province & gave up the Shatt al-Arab waterway. It was abrogated in 1980 with the #IranIraqWar.

Crossing picket lines is bad enough, but #strikebreakers are the worst. One #scab drove a tractor over striking #sugarcane workers in #BritishGuiana on #ThisDayInHistory in 1964, breaking the backs of two women and killing a third, Kowsilla. The driver was acquitted of any crime.

#Antisemitism in the House of Commons appears in questions about #Jewish profiteering in a black market in food, linking refugees to British Jews according to #JosephGoebbels, who noted it in his diary on #ThisDayInHistory in 1942, hoping for peace with Britain on racial grounds.

Initially a prisoner-of-war camp, by the time of the #Camp59Escape on #ThisDayInHistory in 1944 the facility held mostly Italian Jews as well as POWs. #Antifascist #ItalianPartisans breached the #ConcentrationCamp and helped a people escape, then came back to do this twice more.
