While testing the YF-100 Super Sabre, Welch again exceeded mach 1 multiple times beginning May 25, 1953. On October 12, 1954, Welch’s YF-100 came apart during a 7g pull-out at mach 1.55. Welch survived the ejection but died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
