This is retro and fun.
I remember choosing my first computer (AMD 486) because it had a 14400k modem. Started out on America Online and BBS, and later had an actual local ISP for real internet access.
Just trouble-shooting my own stuff, I became very familiar with modem commands and protocols for telephone, fax, etc. A year later I was in Korea, figuring out Slackware Linux.
Jeff Geerling's channel is one worth watching on YT, IMHO.
