The first thing I read this morning was that Marjane Satrapi has passed away. My first encounter with her work was the animated version of Persepolis (I read the comic book a few months later) and, although her body of work is not extense, each one is captivating. The first film I saw this year was Chicken with Plums movie adaptation, which led me to search for the original work.

Last year she declined the French Légion d’Honneur, calling out the hypocrisy of a government that failed to every Iranian refugees they claim to honor…

I can’t ignore what I see as a hypocritical attitude toward Iran, which forged the other part of my identity […] I can’t continue seeing the children of Iranian oligarchs come to spend their holidays in France, even become naturalized, while at the same time young dissidents have difficulty in obtaining a tourist visa to come to see what the country of the Enlightenment and human rights looks like…

“Non ho mai pensato che questo regime sarebbe caduto nel giro di un anno. Ho sempre saputo che avrebbe avuto i mezzi e la capacità di distruggere il movimento ancora una volta. Ma la prossima volta, o quella dopo, sarà la fine”.

Marjane Satrapi non vedrà la fine del regime iraniano, ma quando avverrà tante persone penseranno a lei.
