#Australian #DefenceMinister #RichardMarles says the success of #Australia’s #alliance with the #UnitedStates should not be measured against a single #president or federal government in Canberra, insisting the longstanding ties will endure.

#Trump has repeatedly criticised Australia for not assisting with the #IranWar, while federal #Labor, including Marles and Prime Minister Anthony #Albanese, say the #WhiteHouse has not made any specific request for assistance.

Speaking on ABC TV on Sunday, Marles said close ties to #Washington remained in the Australian national interest.

“I think it’s really important for all Australians to understand how significant the relationship is, and that the relationship is not one that should be measured in the context of any given US administration, or, for that matter, any given government in Australia,” he said.

“We’ve had the alliance in place since 1951 ... this is a long term strategic alliance in the national interest of our country, based on the fact that our two countries have shared values. We have both democracy [NO!], we both have the rule of law [NO!], we both have freedom of speech [NO!], and all of those endure well beyond governments of and any persuasion on either side.

“This continues to be a critically important relationship for Australia, and it will be for decades to come.”

‘The world feels less safe’, says defence minister, #RichardMarles.

‘More countries are engaged in conflict today than at anytime since the end of the 2nd world war.”

In the face of this, the #Albanese government is pursuing every avenue of increasing defence capability quickly – mostly through bigger defence appropriations.

Marles says #Australia is seeing the biggest peacetime increase in our defence spending in the country’s history.

What the Guardian should have asked Francesca Albanese

There are times when even the Guardian is beyond parody. The newspaper which recently published an article by Iran’s foreign minister – as Iranian propaganda does not get a sufficient airing in the West – can be relied upon to find the worst possible take on any subject, even the opening of a cake shop. Last month one

The Spectator

This is the world we're living in:
#FrancescaAlbanese
'Trump’s executive order sanctioning #Albanese prohibited any American person or entity from providing her with “funds, goods or services” – a description so broad it has been compared to a “civil death”. Her apartment in Washington, bought when she and her family were living in the US capital, has been seized. She can no longer use a credit card anywhere in the world, as almost all such transactions are processed by US-based services. “I go around with cash or I have to borrow from friends or from family members,” she says.

Trump’s Hormuz blockade is live. Oil is at $102. China’s Defence Minister says the strait is open for Chinese ships and dares the US to stop them. A forty-nation coalition is forming against the blockade. And one of the last two tankers carrying pre-war oil on earth is heading to Australia. Urban Wronski on the war Trump cannot win.

Hormuz Dateline

The war now has the smell of salt, oil, and old empires trying to defy the tide. Thirty-three kilometres. That is the width of the Strait of Hormuz at its narrowest navigable point: two shipping lanes, each two miles wide, one in, one out, with a median strip of Iranian territorial water between them. Through those lanes passes approximately 21 million barrels of oil every single day. That is one barrel in every five consumed anywhere on earth. Add the liquefied natural gas, and you have […]
