Santos (ASX:STO) has secured final regulatory approval for its flagship $5.8 billion Barossa Gas Project, marking a milestone after years of legal setbacks and environmental opposition. The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority granted the final tick on April 22, allowing the Adelaide-based company to connect its floating production storage and offloading vessel to the field, located about 285km north-northwest of Darwin. First gas is expected in the coming months, with the project now 91% complete and on track for production in the third quarter. Santos has drilled and completed three wells, with pipeline welding nearing completion and work underway on additional wells. The project, capable of producing 3.7 million tonnes of LNG annually, faced fierce opposition from environmental groups and was temporarily halted in 2022 following a Federal Court challenge by Tiwi Island elders. Santos won the case in January 2024, with the Environmental Defenders Office ordered to pay more than $9 million in legal costs after the court found it had fabricated evidence. The delay added an estimated US$200–US$300 million ($314.6-$472 million) to project costs. Environmental advocates continue to criticise the project, citing its high CO₂ content and impact on national emissions targets.
