https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2025-04-17/nih-grant-cuts-are-turning-out-to-be-a-waste-of-money?embedded-checkout=true

"The Trump administration’s waves of massive cuts to funding at the NIH are framed as a recasting of research priorities and a way to save taxpayer money. Another way to frame it is an exercise in massive waste. In terminating nearly 750 NIH grants over the past two months, the government dumped years of investment down the drain…Funding was pulled just as some of these projects were getting off the ground, while others were rounding into their last year of funding — a point where enough data would finally be collected to offer concrete results. Our analysis found that nearly 40% of the canceled R01 grants supported research that had yet to produce findings, meaning all of the agency’s prior investments won’t benefit the public."

This excessive secrecy prevents the public from meaningfully participating in self-government on domestic policies from climate and health issues to foreign affairs. To combat this, Freedom of the Press Foundation (#FPF) began tracking reports of government secrecy in January 2025."

Update. "Will US science survive Trump 2.0?"
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-01295-6

"In just the first three months of his second term, US President Donald Trump has destabilized eight decades of government support for science. His administration has fired thousands of government scientists, bringing large swathes of the country’s research to a standstill and halting many clinical trials. It has threatened to slash billions in funding from US research universities and has terminated more than 1,000 grants in areas such as climate change, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and HIV prevention. This looks likely to be just the beginning."

@petersuber The proposed budget also cuts NASA Science by about 54%. They are against all science now.

@EricFielding I agree. China, more than India and Europe, will be growing into the void created by that administration. The USA, as a super-power with a global leadership, won't decline immediately, but abruptly, and then stay behind for a long time.

I guess that it will stay competitive in engineering for a much longer time, especially aerospace and weapons technology. Life-sciences and cutting edge medicine might also be able to survive in the industrial domain for some time.

@petersuber

@tg9541 @petersuber I have not heard about NASA data being removed from public access. The huge NASA EarthData system has many petabytes of satellite and airborne remote sensing data not duplicated anywhere else. It is also infeasible for copying volume of data and complex metadata. Some processed geocoded data from Landsat and a few other satellites have been copied by Google Earth Engine, Microsoft Planetary computer (or whatever they call it), and open AWS data storage
@EricFielding
What happened once, the loss of a wealth of data from the Apollo missions on magnetic tape, abandoned, no longer periodically copied, not even properly stored, can happen again. With that administration it's even likely, actively, purposefully, not neglect. This is a revolutionary regime, not a regular US government.

@petersuber

Just impossible to comprehend numbers. There is no fat to cut in the U.S. budget. 23% reduction in non-defence spending will destroy U.S. state capacity (further), crater the U.S. economy (further) and harm the whole world. Lives will be lost.

Canada, Europe, Asia and South America need to step up and fill the gap as the United States rockets toward self-induced failed state status.
