Nearly 5,100 faculty have collectively signed these letters on what the American Association of University Professors has called a Day of Action for Higher Ed. This is a collaborative effort independently organized by passionate faculty across four universities… Following the extraordinary sign of leadership from Harvard University on April 14, 2025, these faculty are speaking out to encourage their own institutions to stand up and fight back collectively against the illegal and unprecedented actions of the federal government."

https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/california-newspapers-collection-budget-cuts-20309491.php
"One of #California’s largest collections of digitized #newspapers, going back nearly 200 years and spanning approximately 54 million articles, could disappear due to gutted state #funding. The unexpected news has delivered a heavy blow to historians, journalists, researchers and educators who rely on the archives for their work…The California Digital Newspapers Collection, housed at UC Riverside’s Center for Bibliographical Studies and Research, said on its website that its future “is in jeopardy” after…its budget was completely decimated, leaving [it] with just a few weeks to source $300,000 or face the possibility of getting shut down."
Update. "National Endowment for the Arts rescinds grants, dazing publishers and theaters."

"Arts organizations across the country saw their grants pulled with little explanation, while a proposed federal budget sought to eliminate the arts funding agency altogether."

Update. "The Latest #Trump and #DOGE Casualty: #Energy Data."
https://www.propublica.org/article/the-latest-trump-and-doge-casualty-energy-data
"The #EIA [Energy Information Administration, an independent agency housed inside the Department of Energy, #DOE] has privately informed staff that it is scrapping publication of its closely followed International Energy Outlook for 2025. The previous edition of the international outlook, released every two years, contained 70 pages detailing global trends. The paradox: That will leave the field open to the equivalent publication from the Paris-based International Energy Agency, which conservatives accuse of bending its forecasts to promote climate-change goals."

The Energy Information Administration has long provided reliable data on everything from oil and gas to alternative energy. Now one of its signature reports has been slashed and a second one canceled entirely amid sweeping job reductions and turmoil.
Update. "Protecting research from censorship: resources for scholarly publishers."
https://blog.scholasticahq.com/post/protecting-research-resources-for-scholarly-publishers/
"The onslaught of executive actions introduced over the past few months to impose significant funding cuts and workforce reductions on federal research agencies, take down public data, and prohibit the use of words related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has left many in the crosshairs grappling to wrap their heads around the implications of hastily issued government directives and policy changes. While there are still more unknowns than answers, initiatives are forming to track, assess, and help individuals and organizations respond to threats to research, including the Declaration To Defend Research Against US Government Censorship (#DefendResearch declaration), which #Scholastica has joined. We’ve developed this blog post to help scholarly publishers and editors stay abreast of guidance and initiatives pertinent to their operations and communities…We will update this post with new information as it becomes available."

While there is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the state of research in the US, initiatives are forming to help scholarly publishers respond to government directives and policy changes. We round up resources in this blog post.
Update. Thank you to the Spencer Foundation, Kapor Foundation, Grant Foundation, and Sloan Foundation for this bridge funding program.
https://www.spencer.org/grant_types/rapid-response-bridge-funding-program
"In the face of recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, including large-scale terminations of National Science Foundation (#NSF) research grant awards, we have developed a rapid response bridge grant opportunity for impacted scholars…While it is impossible for private philanthropy to close the gap left by federal funders, we can provide modest grants to mitigate some of the impact on scholars, projects, and project teams. These $25,000 grants are for activities to address immediate needs following grant cancellations."

I've been tracking the impact of #Trump actions on US research, primarily in this Mastodon thread. But the thread is becoming long and unwieldy, and this problem will only get worse.
I'll continue to track this news but I want to stop doing it primarily in threads. Once I depend less on threads, I'll depend more on #tags to help readers find the posts in this collection.
I already use #DefendResearch and will to continue to do so.
It comes from the Declaration To Defend Research Against US Government Censorship.
https://www.defendresearch.org/
But I want to supplement it with a more Trump-specific tag. After mulling over a few possibilities — like TrumpAdminOnResearch and ResearchUnderTrump — I've decided to go with #TrumpVResearch.
Thanks to Alice Meadows and Suze Kundu for the suggestion.
https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/04/30/trump-v-research-how-we-could-turn-the-threats-into-opportunities/
I won't add this tag retroactively to (many) past posts. But going forward I'll use both #DefendResearch and #TrumpVResearch for posts in this collection.
To follow these topics, consider following these tags.
I encourage others to use these tags too, in posts on the same topics. It's one way to #crowdsource this tracking project.
Here's more on this tracking project and the need to crowdsource it.

@EricFielding I agree. China, more than India and Europe, will be growing into the void created by that administration. The USA, as a super-power with a global leadership, won't decline immediately, but abruptly, and then stay behind for a long time.
I guess that it will stay competitive in engineering for a much longer time, especially aerospace and weapons technology. Life-sciences and cutting edge medicine might also be able to survive in the industrial domain for some time.
Just impossible to comprehend numbers. There is no fat to cut in the U.S. budget. 23% reduction in non-defence spending will destroy U.S. state capacity (further), crater the U.S. economy (further) and harm the whole world. Lives will be lost.
Canada, Europe, Asia and South America need to step up and fill the gap as the United States rockets toward self-induced failed state status.

40%... 40%!!!!!

"...(CDC) by one-third..."!!!!!!!!
This is practically state-terrorism. At minimum homicidal.
But unlike the economic policies, won't be seen or felt for long enough to give cover, facilitate the "saving money" idiocy.
And for those who even try to argue the opposite, this will get nowhere near balancing the budget.
Particularly with tax cuts, economy dropping lowering gov revenues/increasing auto-stabilizers, and gutting the IRS.
This will simply leave *everyone* all over the world worse off.
Add another count for the future #MaralagoTrials
science in the US is done.
(honestly, i saw the writing on the wall during COVID - lotta mistrust, lots of 'disbelief' and undermining)
and no one likes to hear this but we were the world leader. maybe one of our last bastions of achievement.
there is no country... not even the entire EU could absorb even half of our scientists and keep their work going.
there is simply no funding for that. we're talking billions of dollars, every year.
irreplaceable, and now, GONE
