8/ What’s left? LinkedIn, of course. (Just kidding…) I love the nonprofit quirky nature of Mastodon and appreciate the work being done by one of its best instances, hachyderm.io. You all are kind of my people, some #Covid cautious, some old programmers and #linux fans, some nature lovers.

But you are all a bit too much like me in one depressing way: We care too deeply about too many things, and we talk about them. I’m not saying anybody shouldn’t. This is one of the last places we can do so. But I just can’t absorb it all anymore. And my own contributions here have only added to it.

I’m not pulling my account or anything. Just sharing some thoughts about this place we’re sitting in and explaining why I’m not really connecting much anymore.

To those who still have the will, keep on talking and fighting. I admire you. //

7/ Reddit remained a valuable resource for much of this terrible decade. When they imposed their new enshittified website, I continued using old.reddit.com and mostly accessed my favorite subs via an ancient iPad that still had a working copy of Alien Blue. When I could no longer post or comment via that app, I took it as a useful way of limiting my time on the platform and went into lurking mode, still keeping up to date on #Covid and occasionally depressing myself reading about #Collapse. And now I can’t even access Reddit via that app, and so it has also pretty much disappeared from my life.

5/ For a while there, Twitter felt like the last best place on the Internet. I connected, in a meaningful supportive way, with hundreds of people being cautious about #Covid. During the two years I spent recovering from a terrible hidden injury that kept me in pain for much of the day and limited my ability to walk or even spend much time sitting upright, I drew strength from those dealing with the immense challenge of #LongCovid. They too had undergone an unwelcome change of their entire lives due to one brief event—ten seconds of pushing too hard on a wrench and breaking my chest for me, ten seconds of inhaling a destructive virus for them.
