Recycling your garden waste into home-made compost is both easy and environmentally friendly. Here we look at the basics of making this valuable soil improver and mulch.

A study in Germany and Luxembourg "has shown for the first time that #permaculture brings about a significant improvement in #biodiversity, #SoilQuality and #CarbonStorage.

According to the study, the soil quality and biodiversity on the permaculture plots was distinctly higher compared to the surrounding conventional agricultural land as well as compared to the literature values for conventional agriculture."

Permaculture found to be a sustainable alternative to conventional agriculture

RPTU University of Kaiserslautern-Landau has shown for the first time, in a joint study with BOKU University, that permaculture brings about a significant improvement in biodiversity, soil quality and carbon storage.

β€œRecently, after a series of extreme heatwaves in California forced her family to run the AC, her monthly electricity costs rose to about $500. Her water bill averages around $100, but because the water is contaminated with pesticides from nearby agricultural fields, her family spends an additional $140 each month to purchase jugs of drinking water. Her grocery bills have gone up as well, after a spate of winter storms disrupted harvests across the state.”

Soil quality and food security

News article from ongoing EU Research projects

CORDIS | European Commission
Our recent posts have tried to highlight some existing #agricultural #pesticides issues w/in #ASEAN. Like the #ClimateCrisis, the pesticides problem is both ubiquitous and existential, i.e., #food production. Wholesale tolerance/acceptance of it is insidious,
1. It degrades food's nutritional value
2. It readily impacts #SoilQuality #biodiversity and #EcosystemServices
3. It exploits occupational health-related disparity among #migrantworkers
4. Its industry profits in the name of #foodsecurity

Around 75% of plants high in protein are imported.

#Plantprotein production must be expanded to:
🌱improve #SoilQuality
🌱decrease fertilizer use
🌱develop #RuralAreas.

Towards a sustainable plant protein and plant oil strategy for the EU

The aim of this own-initiative opinion is to develop a strategy to achieve a sustainable plant protein and plant oil open autonomy in the EU by analysing the potential of EU-grown plants. It will also discuss the potential of pure plant oil as a sustainable source for running heavy tractors and other agriculture and forestry machines in a sustainable energy system.
