The #VictoriaBC Urban Food Table #UFT is a #volunteer #AdvisoryCommittee dedicated to providing informed support to Victoria City Council in matters related to #FoodSecurity policy & decision making. We meet the second Wednesday of each month. Our members are #FoodSystems & #sustainability professionals and include urban and rural farmers , local businesses, educators, community association and garden representatives, health workers, dietitians & environmental stewardship not-for-profit staff. We view local #FoodProduction as fundamental to a healthy & sustainable food system, and share the common goal of a #FoodSecure region.

Our strategic goals focus on urban farming, community and home gardening, food equity, soil restoration, land and biodiversity stewardship, waste-reduction and composting, pollinator support, First Nations Reconciliation, and celebrating local food.

The Urban Food Table meets in a hybrid/online format on the second Wednesday of every month from 4:30pm - 6pm. If you are interested in joining the UFT, or to learn more - email at victoriaurbanfoodtable@gmail.com or through the form below.

Recarbonizing global soils: A technical manual of recommended sustainable soil management

During the last decades, soil organic carbon (SOC) attracted the attention of a much wider array of specialists beyond agriculture and soil science, as it was proven to be one of the most crucial components of the earth’s climate system, which has a great potential to be managed by humans. Soils as a carbon pool are one of the key factors in several Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 15, “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss” with the SOC stock being explicitly cited in Indicator 15.3.1. This technical manual is the first attempt to gather, in a standardized format, the existing data on the impacts of the main soil management practices on SOC content in a wide array of environments, including the advantages, drawbacks and constraints. This manual presents different sustainable soil management (SSM) practices at different scales and in different contexts, supported by case studies that have been shown with quantitative data to have a positive effect on SOC stocks and successful experiences of SOC sequestration in practical field applications. Volume 3 includes a total of 49 practices that have a direct impact on SOC sequestration and maintenance in cropland, grassland, integrated systems and farming approaches.

🔝 Increasing #BiocharDiversity promotes the impacts of #PlantDiversity 🌲 on remediating #Cadmium in soil

So, a few months back, someone posted about using #biochar as an ingredient in seed starter. It seems biochar has a lot of potential good uses -- including #PFAS remediation!

"This project aims to investigate whether biochar can be used as a soil amendment to immobilize PFAS in the soil and reduce its bioaccumulation in the edible parts of vegetable crops, such as lettuce and tomatoes. The study will address several key questions: the optimal application rate of biochar in the soil, the frequency with which additional biochar should be applied after the initial amendment, and low-cost modification techniques to enhance biochar's ability to adsorb short-chain PFAS from the soil. This research will involve both laboratory and field studies. The findings will contribute to developing practical guidelines for farmers on the use of biochar in PFAS-affected soils."

Last day off work & I have soil work to do in backyard. After aerating grounds, I'm sowing fava beans & alfafa seeds over the area that I started remediating work on last Summer.

#Biochar is a promising material for #SoilRemediation. Hao-Ming Yuan et al. found that increasing biochar diversity can promote the impact of plant diversity on #RemediatingSoil contaminated by #HeavyMetals such as Cd.

Part of the backyard area that I did a bunch of sheet & organic materials mulching over last Summer is doing very well. I'll be doing some light hoeing work on that area, once the recent snow melts off. Once I get that ground broken - I'm adding seaweeds, eggshells, tea/coffee grinds & used aloe leaves, all mixed in with free topsoil, over the whole area.

A few of our #cucumbers are still growing.
Some large Oregon #snowpeas.
Ongoing soil remediation project is making slow & steady progress. Cardboard, topsoil, compost, woody debris, crushed seashells, seaweed, grass cuttings, leaf mulch are all breaking down together nicely.
