It's only two months now until the UK/Commonwealth and EU release of The World Beneath our Feet, and the US & Canada release is just a month after that! It's all feeling very real all of a sudden.

I'll be back in the UK in September, with lots of exciting book promotion on the horizon. Pre-orders are SUPER IMPORTANT, so if you or someone you care about would like a book about soil and the incredible life it contains, please go reserve a copy from your preferred book seller now!

(PS: It's got lots of my macrophotography in it too)

Field work half-time for #BEN_EAF! ⛰️

We took small and larger soil samples from whom hashtag#SoilFauna will be heat-extracted in the soil lab at the Aberdeen campus of the #JamesHuttonInstitute. This is mainly springtails (#Collembola), mites (#Acari), and hopeful more small critters!

Further, we did also collect the soil fauna from the pitfall traps: mainly ground beetles (#Carabidae), wolf spiders (#Lycosidae), and harvestmen (#Phalangiidae). 🕷️🪲

Thanks again to Andrea Britton and Debbie Fielding for the help in the field work!

Adventures of a tiny white gummy bear. When you're a springtail this smol, microfungi are perfect drinking vessels, and slime mold sporangia are towering trees.

I've not been out with my camera much lately; with parenthood, work and book edits taking up all my time. But I hope to pick back up with the macrophotography very soon! New Zealand's hidden soil treasures await discovery!

Press proofs of 'The World Beneath our Feet' are out in the world, and wonderful quotes are coming in. I feel extremely grateful and humbled by the positive reception so far!

Audiobook recording was due to start this week, but unfortunately I caught HFMD from our baby and now my throat is made of broken glass and lava. Not a fun time, but getting these proofs in the post today lifted spirits. I can't wait to see the final version, containing my macrophotography too!

Available for pre-order now, with the hardcover, e-book and audiobook launching in August/September this year. You'll love it, I'm sure.

While samplings of #alpine beasties in the #Cairngorms #NationalPark for my #BEN_EAF project at the #JamesHuttonInstitute are still in the preparation, here some impressions of the critters I've found while hiking.
As temperatures go up, so more activity is expected, right?

I'm looking forward so much to this book about #soilLife #soil! @frankashwood is a great nature photographer and when the soil ecologist starts to talk about these wonderful creatures ...
Just follow him not to miss it!

I've been quiet on here recently, as things have been extremely busy with juggling teaching alongside making the final touches on my book.

It's worth the hard work though, as the book is almost ready for publication, and early endorsements and book reviews are starting to come in either side of the pond (including from some of my environmental science communication heroes!). Waking up today to this glowing review by the illustrious Publishers Weekly was so lovely!

Now that the academic teaching semester is over, hopefully I can get back to posting some new macrophotography and book updates on here more regularly.

Climate Change Has Two Drivers. We’ve Been Largely Ignoring One. - Bioneers

Brett KenCairn explores how nature-based solutions can address the overlooked role of land degradation in driving climate change.

Sunday, April 26th. The compost pile has been flipped to the west of the pallet sided bin. The compost pile is mostly browns. The last apples and brassica stalks of the fall 2025 season are still whole as the compost was frozen for months. The pitchfork is the right tool to fork and sift the lumpy materials. Nettle water extract and comfrey water extract were added on top. It’s a lovely compost pile #compost #SoilBiodiversity, #nematodes, #minnesota, #Zone4b

💯 the invisible ecosystem services provided by the soil microbial community is difficult to overstate.
Soil aggregation (=erosion prevention), carbob storage, water purification, breakdown of pollutants, biodiversity, soil fertility for agricultural production...

I liked this part
"fungal diversity can be protected no matter where it occurs. Land managers can allow more woody debris to remain on the landscape as a food source for fungi; anyone can improve their backyard’s soil health by composting."

We take care for birds, thus let's take care for our fungi!
