In Béjaïa on Algeria’s Mediterranean coast, drought has depressed harvests and discouraged farmers from investing.

In 2018, Keltouma Adouane planted a kilo of saffron corms that experts said wouldn’t grow in the coastal climate — and proved them wrong.

She now sells saffron products locally and is working with other women to develop cultivation and marketing of this high-value crop.
