NIGHT NURSE

- 1 oz Jamaican Blended Aged Rum ❸
- 1 oz Punt e Mes
- ¾ oz Campari
- ½ oz overproof Pot Still Lightly Aged Rum ❶
- ¼ oz Cynar
- 1 tsp banana liqueur
- 1 tsp coffee liqueur

Stir // Strain // Garnish: orange peel

When I first saw this list of ingredients I thought it sounded too complicated, but it really was a nice combo. I went for my best bottle of Hampden, the 2010 LROK expression, combined with the classic OP Jamaican pot still Smith & Cross.

The rums get elevated by the banana liqueur which brings out their funk, while the three amari and coffee liqueur form a four-layer wall of bitter that reins it back in to a place of balance. The Punt e Mes brings a hint of vermouth and that orange peel oil lands you pretty close to a rum Negroni.

CAFÉ ANGO

- ½ oz Angostura bitters
- ½ oz Licor 43
- ½ oz Ancho Reyes chili liqueur
- 2 oz fresh brewed espresso

Shake // Double strain // Garnish: coffee beans

An interesting espresso martini riff with Angostura bitters as the "base" even though it's not a huge slug like some other cocktails. Also in proportion is a lack of sugar syrup, with the two liqueurs providing all the sweetness. The chili liqueur shows up at the end leaving a pleasant warmth on your palate.

The choice of espresso bean makes a huge difference in this one, and at the moment I had a darker roast that my partner prefers in the grinder which I felt made the drink too bitter overall. I'll probably try this one again with a lighter roast (what I prefer drinking anyway).

This has been on my reshake list forever and I finally got around to it! In December 2024 I went to Mothership, a space-themed tiki bar in San Diego with Star Trek TOS vibes that I just loved. At the bar it came in a Nachtmann crystal glass and specifically named Stroh, an Austrian rum. Both are really easy to get in my area, so I vowed to remake it.

The spec proportions are my best guess, but I think I landed pretty close and it tasted great. I went a step further with the Stroh and used a barspoon to cover the dehydrated orange for a flaming boost to warp speed! The original had a candied orange instead of dehydrated (see second pic to compare).

Gifted bottle, never heard of this stuff before. My nose is a bit stuffy at the moment but it's extremely sweet toffee and mocha flavours and homeopathic level whiskey burn sampled straight.
