If you're an Apple user in need of a new laptop consider a used Lenovo Thinkpad on eBay. $250 Gets you 16GB of ram, 512GB storage on a laptop in near mint condition that will run GNU/Linux Mint for years to come. In one year of use I have no hesitation recommending it as a macOS laptop replacement.
Install Mint with the Cinnamon desktop and you'll have a super solid OS that can even be make to look like macOS if that's your preference. No, it's not macOS and that's a good thing. In most ways it's better. For most use cases GNU/Linux and Software is an excellent choice. And you'll have it on a laptop at a fraction of the cost.
Performance? In my use, easily on par with an M2 iPad or M1 Mac (I don't have newer). Boot time is about 20 seconds. Most apps launch in 2 seconds or less.
Downside: Speakers not great, screen not as bright.
The free software ecosystem is huge and the available apps are fantastic. Mint installs are super easy.
