New work out! Mosaic uses images, sound, video and data to build a portrait of a western NSW wetland.

It's an experiment in environmental data-storytelling and using #conservationtech for public engagement. With waterbirds galore, feral critters and livestock, it's also an attempt to show the complexity of our "patchy" landscapes.

Made for Flow-MER and the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office:

TIL George Shiras invented the camera trap in the 1890s, using tripwires, remote shutter releases and a magnesium flash. Astounding shots from around Whitefish Lake, a Michigan wetland, all documented in his book: https://archive.org/details/HuntingWildLifeWithCameraAndFlashlight.Volume121935Copy/

To save its unique and rare birds, New Zealand is turning to AI and genetic research

New Zealand is planning to eradicate millions of invasive animals that prey on the country's rare birds. The goal may not be possible, unless new technology can be developed to do it. (Image credit: Yang Liu)

Interesting alternative to using PIR for automated wildlife cameras, this uses a VL53L4CD Time of Flight Distance Sensor, so it can work with reptiles (cold!) https://hackaday.io/project/192032-openthing-2-reptrap // might be faster than PIR for birds etc too? #wildlabs #conservation #conservationtech
Openthing 2 - RepTrap

The Rep Trap idea is a hardware system designed to overcome the limitations and challenges of conventional trapping methods. Inspired by PIR sensors commonly used in wildlife cameras, the hardware system features a gate-like sensor arrangement, specifically designed for animals to pass through. Positioned with its sensor element facing downwards, the system incorporates a distance measurement unit within the sensor. This unit continuously measures the height below the sensor, detecting any changes in height.
