I went to the western edge of Kōbe City and up a ropeway to see the Great Akashi Bridge (明石海峡大橋) that crosses the Seto Inland Sea to Awaji Island and on to Shikoku Island where we used to live (photo 1). There is a span of nearly 2km between the huge pylons. On the other side of the hill I could see Suma Beach and much of Kōbe, but Ōsaka behind it was hidden in the mist of the current rainy season. Then I went to Sumadera (須磨寺), a fascinating temple full of eclectic iconography. It leads an active Buddhist sect, with priests chanting and engaging with parishioners, as compared to Kyōto tourist temples that are like open-air museums. In the next post I'll show a unique section of Sumadera with Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu iconography from Nepal.
