"Years after #YounesDardashti’s death, his granddaughter #Galeet is still singing with him in #NewYork.

Using #archival #recordings of her grandfather’s voice, #GaleetDardashti created her #album #Monajat — meaning an intimate conversation with God — layering her vocals over decades-old tapes of him #singing #Selihot, religious poetry chanted nightly before the #Jewish New Year.

Across the country in #LosAngeles, #JacquelineRafii — senior #cantor of Valley Beth Shalom, one of the largest Conservative #synagogues in the U.S. — is also working to preserve her #Iranian grandfather’s traditional #Persian Jewish #music.

While in #cantorial school, Rafii rediscovered cassette tapes made of her grandfather leading a #Passover seder in #Tehran. When her family was forced to flee the country following the #IslamicRevolution in 1979, they brought that cassette tape with them."

"Throughout his long life, #Kaplan made many contributions to #Judaism — his landmark 1934 text “Judaism as a Civilization”; the aforementioned #Haggadah; a similarly revamped #Shabbat #prayerbook; and a new university of Judaism on the West Coast. Now his life gets reconstructed in a #biography #published last month, “#MordecaiMKaplan: Restless Soul,” by #JennaWeissmanJoselit.

“I loved #writing it,” #WeissmanJoselit told The Times of Israel of the latest volume in the #Yale University Press #Jewish Lives series. “It kept me awake at night. The questions Kaplan posed were as relevant today as they were back in his time — sometimes even more relevant.”

She explained: “I think he was worried how [Judaism] would survive simply as it was. He did not… see it as able to sustain itself. He did not see its life as guaranteed… He was determined to be its white knight...”

Reading a bit of #Talmud. It says a #Torah scholar is not allowed to be in a city without the essentials of life, including a (religious) court and a fund for the poor. This must be why one of my rabbis said "Without community, there is no Torah."

Pope Leo’s first Easter, among the Christian memories of a “distracted” Rome.

Prevost knows Rome well: he studied it as a young man, he was the general prior of the Augustinian order for 12 years at ten meters from the Colonnade of St. Peter. And he knows well the memories of Roman Christianity. Whose origins are linked to the presence of the oldest Jewish community in the diaspora.
