I work in defence and the issue is that many European countries have small populations so defence planning is really hard as modern equipment is breathtakingly expensive. Also many countries, like the Scandinavians harden their infrastructure because their (excellent and expensive) airforces will need to land on the freeway within the first ten days of a war. They tried to explain this to him. He didn't listen
