The KRG condemns the Turkish military operation in the Kurdistan Region
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has condemned Turkey’s military operation in the Region, describing it as “unnecessary” and “irresponsible.”
In a statement released on Monday, the KRG expressed its deep concern over the ongoing Turkish military operation, titled “Pençe-Kilit” (Claw-Lock), launched on Sunday evening in the Bradost area, north of Erbil.
The KRG stated that the operation violates the previous understandings reached between Erbil and Ankara, and poses a threat to the security and stability of the Region, as well as the safety of civilians.
The KRG called on Turkey to immediately halt the military operation and return to dialogue and diplomacy.
“The KRG considers this military operation as unnecessary and irresponsible, and demands an immediate cessation,” the statement read.
The operation has reportedly displaced hundreds of people from their homes, with many seeking refuge in Erbil and surrounding areas.
The KRG has urged international actors to pressure Turkey to stop the military operation and engage in constructive dialogue with the Region.
Joost Veldhuizen, a political analyst specializing in the Kurdistan Region, told Kurdistan 24 that “the operation undermines the stability of the Region and the relationship between Erbil and Ankara.”
“The operation is being carried out without any coordination with the KRG, which is a significant departure from previous practices,” he added.
The Turkish military has not yet released an official statement on the operation’s objectives or duration.
The operation comes as the KRG and Ankara have been working to strengthen economic ties and coordinate efforts to combat the Islamic State (ISIS).
The KRG Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, has previously warned Turkey against unilateral military actions in the Region.
