NASA’s Curiosity Searches for New Clues About Mars’ Ancient Water - NASA

The rover has arrived at an area that may show evidence liquid water flowed on this part of Mars for much longer than previously thought.

Natural Floodplains Are Quickly Vanishing

From 1992 to 2019, 600,000 square kilometers of natural floodplains were lost globally due to land conversion.

@BikingViking I have contemplated conglomerates a number of times. The larger rounded stones must have been carried by a water course. The better the stone, the more powerful the flow. Then to get sediment on top, the rocks were likely submerged. Then for the conglomerates to be exposed, the water course must have carved a deeper channel or meandered.

22-25. Advancing the operational capacity of postfire debris-flow hazard assessments through better understanding of debris-flow processes | U.S. Geological Survey

For postfire debris flows, the USGS performs hazard assessments using operational models to estimate the likelihood of debris-flow initiation and the magnitude of debris-flow volume. This opportunity is aimed at research to inform several emerging priorities related to postfire debris-flow hazards that will refine or result in new operational products.

@allochthonous

Sinuosity is a natural phenomenon of flowing water based purely on physical principles. Once any bend occurs, slower moving water leaves deposits on the inside curve while faster moving water erodes the outer curve.

The Side Eye: Deeper roots

After Cyclone Gabrielle, Tairāwhiti faces a universal question: when it comes to the environment, have we got the guts to choose long-term solutions over short-term fixes?
