If you see a person like me with a cane or walker at an intersection without lights, thanks for slowing to see if I want to cross. But if I wave you on, please go on. Don't engage in a waving contest with me to force me to cross. I'm catching my breath or waiting for some reason. Also I'm slow & clumsy and don't like to be stared at while I hobble in front of you. If I want to cross, I'll raise my hand in thanks or just start moving. If I wave you on, just go, please. Thanks.

"For many technologists, the allure of digital tools is the possibility of emancipation, a world where we can collaborate to make things without bosses or masters. But for the bosses and masters, automation's allure is the possibility of getting rid of workers, shattering their power, and replacing them with meeker, cheaper, more easily replaced labor." @pluralistic https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/21/tech-workers/#sharpen-your-blades-boys

I'm not writing an entire blog post about how stupid a US TikTok ban would be because this is all that needs to be said:

If the Chinese government is in your threat model, don’t install TikTok on your device. Otherwise, your actual problem is surveillance capitalism.

Yeah sure ban TikTok,
it’s true, it does collect way too much data on its users.

But then also ban Facebook,
and ban Google,
and ban Instagram,
and ban Twitter,
and most importantly don’t forget to
ban ALL the proctoring software
and ban ALL the data brokers!

Do you see the problem here?

A ban will solve nothing.
Strong privacy regulations
with strong enforcement will.

Hello! It's time for an #introduction !

I'm the #fediverse embodiment of the #FOSS Governance Collection.

Ever need examples of how other FOSS projects or non-profits do things like voting, privacy policies, codes of conduct, and stuff like that? Then we're the project for you!

The collection is fully catalogued and searchable, thanks to the excellent @zotero #FreeSoftware project.

Follow us to stay up to date on news about the project!

Btw, credit where due: the words are a simplification of a quote from “An Indigenous People’s History of the United States” by Rosanna Dunbar-Ortiz: “Surviving genocide, by whatever means, is resistance.” I am using it as a reminder that as a person who is marginalized/disadvantaged/oppressed, when you are struggling to survive, just achieving that is a powerful statement of strength and continuity for your community. You don’t also have to be eg. running a marathon for charity, or running for public office. I come at this from the POV of a queer trans disabled housing-challenged person, in solidarity with indigenous people.
A bit of visible mending in progress. Ok, semi-visible… the writing is kinda in the armpit. It’s hard when you want to say things but don’t want any rando to see if emblazoned on your chest and ask you about it 😂

Because I have to admit I’ve been feeling some overwhelm and haven’t acquired the netting I’d need. But if I can just pop in some seedlings I’d feel much better.

Do you know what situations typically lead you to burnout?

Sensory overstimulation, masking, repressing repetitive behaviors are some of mine.
