As we've been listening together, I kept remarking to my partner—who grew up in and then escaped the cult of Evangelical Christianity—that maybe the reason I never fell into a cult is because I'm lazy. As the author kept describing various cults and what was expected of their members, it all just seemed like so much work to me. Example after example, my reaction was "Ha, no fuckin' way would I put that much work into anything."
Tonight we listened to "Chapter 8: Exploitation of Labor," and yeah, it really does seem that laziness might make a person immune to cults—or, at least, less likely to fall into their orbits and more likely to leave sooner rather than later if/when captured by one. Fantastic 😁
Resist the cult of capitalism and all the other cult-y bullshit in your life by embracing your laziness, fam. Call in sick. Take a vacation. Turn down that promotion that would see your job consume your life for the benefit of your bosses. Fuck 'em. There's more to life than work. There's more to you than your job. Rest, reconnect with yourself, and take back your power.
