This Garlic book ( âŹď¸âŹď¸) is a real treasure.
I have had a real problem with aphids on the flat leaf chives that has taken a consistent effort to resolve, and I am still keep a vigilant eye on them. The book talks about them - they are onion aphids! They are attracted only to sulphur scents of alliums. I had wondered why they were not spreading more widely.
Alliums includes garlic so I'll be keeping an eye out.

đ§ In good news #fFomTheGarden - 2 of the Spanish Roja garlics are up! Also, about â of the Glenlarge. So tardy, this lot. Planted a week after the first half of the bed, they are 16 days behind them. The garlics in the first half of the bed are growing fast and beautifully.
đ§ Having said that, I saw a new Early Purple emerged today in the first half of the bed.
đ§ Garlics are funny. One moment they have not sprouted, the next they are 2cm or more tall! How does that happen? I need a camera for the garlic bed.
đ I picked the last or maybe the penultimate strawberry of the season this morning. Delicious, altho not as sweet as earlier ones. I am very happy with the small strawberry harvest, given the state of the bed after my string of illnesses and so little rain for ages.
𼏠The leafy salad greens are growing strong! Such a delight. So tiny still but I can see my winter salads in this bed.
đż The #fermenting plant juice is looking very good. So far, more juice than I expected, fermenting beautifully and no smell.
đż Weeds are everywhere #BeautyAmongstTheWeeds
đśď¸ The chilli bush looks like it is in its last legs after 3 years of creating hundreds of chillies each season. I plan to cut the branches to remove the chillies (small, Thai-style chillies) and remove the bush, and add compost and mulch to that part of the bed.
đ I have some ripe cumquats!
Picked 170'ish bay leaves to share with friends.
Still getting some marties, only a few greenies left out there.
One of my garlic types I planted - Spanish Rojo, is listed in the book. It says "weak ... (sometimes doesn't grow)"
It is not up yet. 2 of my other types are all up, one other is emerging day by day. No sign of the Spanish Rojo yet.

Not bad...
It must have rained overnight. The garden beds are damp, as are things I potted up as gifts to other gardeners and a couple of pots I sowed with poppies yesterday. The rain droplets have gathered on the large nasturtium leaves and they sparkle in the first rays of the sun from behind the clouds.
There are about 10 beans on the 2 self-sown black-eyed pea/bean bushes (from my cold compost heap). They are so incredible. The bean pods start like very thin pencils reaching for the sky. As the beans develop inside the pods, weight and gravity eventually take over.
If I was eating them "green" (not dried) there are 2 pods that would be ready. But there are not enough to make a serving. I will remember to plant more next year. Meanwhile this year I am letting them dry on the bush and saving the beans inside for cooking at some point.
They make me very happy.

Kid #2 and I returned from camping yesterday, mostly unscathed. Today, we are farming.
Potatoes! This is the haul from half the self-seeded plants.
I don't have a scale, but it feels like 5kg
