My #FavCharacterS should be Sakura Kasugano from Street Fighter b/c I love her & she taught herself how to throw a fireball just by watching Ryu (& should have been a MC in games going forward like SF3 imo)

But I am going to give it to Sheva Alomar, the only black woman protagonist in Resident Evil, only black playable main (Josh is a side story), basically forgotten & will never come back b/c her use was to offset charges of racism in RE5 b/c *waves hand* it's GD RE5. She was originally planned as a non-playable rebel leader, & I don't think she was even supposed to be African (hence the last name). She has an AWFUL racist bonus costume. But she's also very cool, brave, helped rescued Jill & shut Wesker up forever. & I love playing her. So +1000 points in my book.

RE5 is such an annoying game for me b/c it's EXTREMELY RACIST (& if you read all the backstory material it's even MORE so, there are RACE RIOTS against white ppl preceding the outbreak) but it's also an amazing 2 player co-op experience I've never found in another game. And also I just really like Sheva and playing as her, & like she is part of the duo that takes down Wesker. Not Claire, not Jill, not Leon, it's Sheva.

Just don't read her backstory, it's hilarious bad (she was orphaned, lived in the wild, taken in by anti-Umbrella terrorists but turned them into the CIA (to prevent civilian deaths) who said they'd release them AND KEPT THEIR WORD, then was educated in the US where she "learned English better than a native speaker" which means she speaks with a British accent I guess. xD)

I remember just burning through this game on Day 1, co-op with my friend, and I of course kicked zombie ass with her.

@cthellis the restrictions in the RE series of the time (no moving while shooting, liimited iterm space, etc) really helped the co-op mode and it's why other co-op games just haven't hit that spot for me. RE6 was built for drop in play so everybody had their own copy of weapons and ammos and you couldn't trade.

RE5 made it so you and your partner had to plan out who carries what and whose job is to do what. (Usually my friend is Chris with Handgun/Shotgun/Magnum) and I do (SMG/Sniper/Grenade Launcher)

I also like all the assymetrical teamwork parts, like having to do something while your partner covers you, being separated and having to coordinate how to get back together, etc

plus the teamwork QTEs made QTEs kind of fun

Of course my formative co-op experiences were things like playing Star Raiders or Castle Wolfenstein (1981) where I got to shoot the aft guns, or point a pistol at a chest for five minutes to find…. NOTHING!

RE5 was so complex in comparison, and yet so much easier! 😝

@otherdracula they're never going to remake 5 or 6 very likely. If they do remake 5 it probably won't be co-op, and it'll just be Chris, I have a feeling. Or they'll separate the two characters as separate stories and it just won't be the same.

Also they will never do the bedroom eyes 4some scene at the end.

Nor make Wesker as cheesy as he was.

There's probably other Ts I love, but my #FavCharacterT was always going to Tsubasa Uehara from Arisa, a series most people have never read or known about b/c the covers look like it's a Shoujo romance b/c it's drawn & written by a Shoujo romance author but it's actually about a deliquent tomboy, Tsubasa, who goes undercover as her seemingly "perfect" twin sister, Arisa, after Arisa attempts suicide & ends up in a coma.

Tsubasa discovers that at Arisa's school, students text a mysterious "King" their wishes & they are granted (in horrible ways). Thus begins the game of cat & mouse, or as I put it, "it's Nancy Drew vs Light Yagami and don't bet on Light".

Tsubasa is brave, strong, & clever, and resilient. She even survives a bomb & appears through a window like Batman.

I've actually always been shocked that Arisa's not just never been adapted into an anime, but that it's never been adapted into a live action US TV Show or anything because there's really nothing about it that anchors it to Japan or requires it to be animated, and Americans LOVE their high school gossip girl style drama stuff.

The concept of the bad girl pretending to be her good girl sister at her school (in the US they'd probably make it a private school and Tsubasa coming from an urban public school) and getting into a cat and mouse game with a mysterious antagonist with all the other characters that are in the story involved seems to be perfect for a live action adaptation.

My only qualms is I would strengthen the ending a bit, but I can't get into that without spoilers. >_>

I really thought the series was a romance series b/c I'd seen it at my library forever. And I looked it up b/c somebody mentioned that the relationship between the two mains in Citrus was similar to the relationship between the sisters in Arisa, and I was like "oh is Arisa a yuri?"

and then I looked up the synopsis and was like... what

WHAT

and I knew I had to read it

and I was not disappointed, but I can't get anybody else who would love mystery/thriller stories to read it b/c the covers all look like this

@ami_angelwings #FavCharacterT: Lieutenant Tisarwat, introduced in the Ancillary Justice sequel Ancillary Sword.

She's a caring, mostly decent person. Has a subconscious drive to take over the world that the Fleet Captain steers her away from.

She's dealing with, um, an unprecedented personal crisis in the midst of an unprecedented political crisis. Her mental health is dire and she's on medication much of the time. Nonetheless she spends every day helping people, making friends, plotting, subverting the government (complimentary), and so forth.

As someone on medication (for, um, non-science fiction reasons), it affects me to see characters who are struggling, receiving treatment, but still complex and well-rounded and capable and so forth.

By the end of the series, thanks to an idea the Fleet Captain suggested but only Tisarwat could execute, she's maybe one of the most pivotal figures in the history of human space (though almost no one knows it).

(I could say some of the same things about Seivarden, but her situation is somewhat different and I picked someone else for "S".)

@ami_angelwings This one was tough. Lots of recognizable characters but for me not iconic enough. Have to go with one that has had staying power.

T-800. What a magnificent villain. Arnold nailed the role like nothing else. The robotic nature and again a villain that’s cool (third on my list I believe). Had Arnold played the lead I think it would have been a flop.

My favorite was always the first Terminator. The concept is perfect, and the budget constraints honestly helped. I still think it’s better than 2 (which I saw in theaters when it premiered).

Arnold was the action hero of the 80s, and this was his biggest role imho. Stuff of legends.

(Also the other movies were not good, not anywhere. Just terrible.)

2 was straight up saved by T-1000 imho. He nailed that out of the park. Such a machine. Best part was that he caught him when he ran after the bike. He was terrifying. T-800 had charm, T-1000 had that “you are fucked” vibes.

Amidst so much grim storytelling these days, it was refreshing to meet a companion that was genuinely and intensely compassionate, and not portrayed as naive or childish. He also has an interesting twist halfway through that really deepens his character, and gave him a really interesting interplay with my MC; I eventually wrote 30k words of fanfic about it

Also she's made friends with the local magical girl, who is training her to be stronger.

Anyway.

She tries her best. (And I have another goober I have in mind for number Y.) (I really hope the author gets well enough to continue the series, volume 6 ended on a wicked nasty cliffhanger.)

SILAS, the AI on board an exploration spaceship, is programmed to be as human-like as possible. His design is in fact so successful that he develops psychosis, just as the crew gets in serious trouble, and spends most of the book hallucinating various scenarios where he’s a doctor named Silas Coade. His subconscious, manifesting as a short-tempered woman named Ada Cossile, tries to shake him out of it.

@ami_angelwings for S I will go with Shiba-i (Shibai? some websites put a dash in his name and some don't) Sazabi from SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors.

I actually only started watching the show because I saw a pic of him and thought he was cute and wanted to see what his deal was. This led me down the SD Gundam rabbit hole which is never-ending, and so now there are lots of other anime, manga, games, etc I discovered because of him.

He looks like a little doll in a wedding dress, doesn't he? But he's actually a sly and cunning person.

@ami_angelwings I've been waiting for #FavCharacterS so I can highlight Sakuta Azusagawa, the titular "Rascal" in the "Rascal Does Not Dream Of" light novel turned anime series.

At first "Rascal" looks like a harem hijinks story but Sakuta is absolutely devoted to Mai from start to finish, and the two of them become capable partners in dealing with the various "Adolescence Syndrome" weirdness.

He's full of heart, sass, and determination, earning his place with the girl.

My favorite fictional villain is Sephiroth. Imho the best video game villain and the counter part to the movies Darth Vader. Basically a very powerful and cool villain, that while obviously evil we can still enjoy.

Which is a stark contrast to reality’s evil people. For obvious reasons. I just want to read their obituaries and never hear about them before and after.

He’s got an amazing set of music connected to him, mysterious past (though meh sources), is not a push over, and has an agenda you can almost buy into a bit.

Also a dead simple weapon. Cheeky name and just big. Same as Darth, red lightsaber. Done. Simple.

Plus an interesting contrast to the almost always so very dull main characters in JRPGs (the most interesting thing about Cloud is Tifa and Aerith!).

Which reminds me, next FF better have a strong, well written, female lead. Not dull.

@yon @ami_angelwings I'm a big fan of the way Sephiroth is just fucking dead the whole game. Bro got ganked by a level one Cloud before the even game started! You've been chasing a ghost!
Usually that kind of reveal pisses me off but here it's fine (getting to kick the real Sephiroth's ass at the end probably helps a lot).

@ami_angelwings So many! Samwise Gamgee, Sarah Connor, Sheev Palpatine, Satsuki Kusakabe, Sam (Freelance Police), San (a.k.a. Princess Mononoke), Saul Goodman, Saw Gerrera, and I'm sure I'm forgetting many more.

But I'm going with Sonic The Hedgehog, who more than any other represents the pure joy of childhood gaming in my memory, even if I haven't kept up with him in adulthood.

Compassionate (if Paragon), charismatic, *and* can kick my ass? And damn do I love a woman in armour. If I was Liara, I'd be utterly smitten too. (I just wish I could stand Mass Effect 2)

@SilverGM I thought of my S being Sara Ryder but I only really like *my* Ryder so I didn't count it

@ami_angelwings #FavCharacterS: Sorawo Kamikoshi from Otherside Picnic. She may seem like your standard "Socially Awkward Protagonist" at first, but she's more than that: she actually kind of sucks.

She's antisocial and awkward to the point that her inner monologue is inevitably "ugh, this sounds like a pain" when she can't escape being considerate to her friends and the people around her.

She can be pretty callous, especially towards strangers and in especially traumatic situations, but mostly for good reasons.

She's not terrible, she's just moderately awful. I love her.

She's been trying her best, but she still struggles to express herself and her needs, and her awkwardness still results in friction with the other characters.

I like that... I don't know how to say it... the series doesn't just make her social issues a cute affectation, and also doesn't just trot them out for eye-rolling romantic misunderstandings and drama. It's just an element of her life that produces bigger or smaller difficulties.

The ronin who popularized one of the most iconic archtypes in media today, the badass just stumbles into trouble and kills their way out of it. Tashiro Mifune really was one of the all time greats.

@filby @ami_angelwings It's amazing to think about how much of grindhouse cinema, particularly samurai/ronin, was visually influenced by one guy accidentally over cranking the pressure on a hose and Akira Kurosawa deciding that it was now the canon ending scene.

@ami_angelwings Starman. Specifically, Jack Knight from the DC comic book series done in the 90s.

His dad was Starman, and he didn’t want to take over the “family business.” But when his older brother, who did try to take the Starman mantle, died… he decided to become Starman. And he did it his own way.

Did I mention that he runs an antiques and collectibles store and that he just wears street clothes with a pair of goggles (often a leather jacket too)?
