I've decided my #FavCharacterJ. I know he's turned into a caricature by parodies over decades, but James T. Kirk isn't Zapp Brannigan: he seduces women when he's trying to get his ship & crew out of danger, he only fights when it's forced on him (people know the Gorn fight but not how it ended). He's ultimately a man of peace & exploration, & it's embodied in his most heroic moment: surrendering the Enterprise in ST6 because he knew peace was more important than his personal feelings. I love Kirk.

So it's hard on me that I'm going with Babylon 5's John Sheridan & his ability to get out of any situation by smuggling nukes into everything. But the show completely turned around when he took over. He is a great character, clever, thoughtful & played by the perfect actor.

@ami_angelwings Jernau Morat Gurgeh, from Iain M. Banks' "The Player of Games".

An expert in games of all types, they are sent to an alien planet which the Culture wishes to teach a lesson in ... well, *culture*. The civilisation is brutally repressive, racist and misogynistic and organises itself around a great game. Winning the ultimate tournament gives one the right to become emperor of the empire.

As racists tend to be, the Azad believe it impossible for any lesser race to win the game at even moderate levels, let alone the tournament. Gurgeh's job, of course, is to humiliate them by winning.

There is a story within a story as well, which you might figure out before the reveal, but will give you a big 'oof' when you do either way. The Culture is a post-scarcity anarchosyndicate which in short means anyone can have whatever they want whenever they want it, so citizens often make elaborate multi-level schemes to keep themselves occupied.

@ami_angelwings Good old Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Amazing character played by an amazing actor. He’s both badass and commanding, but also empathic and thoughtful.

Trying hard not just to do the right thing, but to figure out what’s the right thing is. Actually leading people, giving proper advice.

He’s what I wish our leaders would be, but frightfully few are.

Make it so.

(I hope I don’t have to tell anyone where he’s from.)

J: This one's EASY. Jimmy the Hand, later "Squire James of Krondor," from Raymond E Feist's "Riftwar" saga which starts with Magician. (Spoilers for a half-century-old-ish fantasy novel series, I guess.)

Is he the Platonic Ideal of the "boy thief in a vaguely medieval fantasy story setting"? Oh, totally yes. Does he steal every scene he's in, from the time we meet him until death? Also absolutely yes.

One Mr. Jack Jarvis, Esq of Still Game. One of the two most old Glaswegian men alive, and you can probably count on his pal Victor McDade being my choice for V. Jack's the more Everyman one of the pair, a retired shop keeper who's not as quick on the uptake as Victor, a retired engineer, and more gruff where Victor is witty and dapper. Because of that, however, he's far better at translating people's emotions than Victor is--

@ami_angelwings it's an obvious one, but there's no contest. Jean-Luc Picard was and is my role model. A leader who prides himself on his own knowledge and experience, but also surrounds himself with experts, cultivates mutual respect, and welcomes challenge.

Not only is he a great officer, he values the arts just as much as his duties - he makes the flagship of the Federation a venue for plays, music, and painting (even if he's terrible at it himself).

She's ENDLESSLY charismatic in a way only Laura Bailey can muster, but she's also just a scared kid finding her way in the world? There's a tenderness to her that's really offset by her chaotic nature and the way that she's disarms everyone around her immediately that makes her unbelievably compelling.
