Procedural animation test of 3 characters for an interactive TV series I worked on in 2000 and 2001.

The characters reflected digital subjects. They were named Bug, Emil (πŸ“§) and MP3. πŸ™‚

Kids could influence the story development via internet, which was novel at the time. The production won an EMMA award in Cannes, and was covered in Time magazine.

The movement of the legs was driven by the position of the body. I was experimenting a lot with animation automation at the time.

I used a 3ds Max plug-in called Clay Studio Pro to model the snails. It was one of the earliest SDF tools, back then still called Metaballs.

@metin I got Hoi on an Amiga demo disk (Possibly Amiga Format) and loved it. Unfortunately, my pocket money at 7 years old was too limited for me to get the full game πŸ˜…

@bitflipped Cool to read that you remember that. A Hoi demo was indeed included on one or more magazines. πŸ™‚

The full game was pretty expensive, and we never got paid by the publisher, so it's good you didn't buy it, even if you would've had the cash. πŸ˜‰

@metin Pretty good! You can't fake this aesthetic today... I see people try but they can't help but add filters or "improve" on it
@upmultimedia Thanks! Yeah, back then there was no global illumination yet, so shadow areas were often simply black. πŸ™‚ You could fake bounced light with strategically placed lights, but often the deadline didn't allow for such refinements, because of the extra work and rendering time.
