Since everyones’s all “spaced out” with space fever, this seemed appropriate.

The soundtrack is great, but I’d like to use this opportunity to defend 2010 as a film.

It’s actually a pretty good movie, and an engaging continuation of the story; what happened to the vessel, Bowman, and what went wrong.

It may be more conventional and dialogue heavy, but holds its own after Kubrick set a near impossible standard.

The soundtrack to 2010 is less abstract, but suspenseful and emotional. Also very different than the original film’s soundtrack of pre-existing classical, but very effective for the sequel.

I have great respect for Shannon and Jamie*’s 80s Kids project. These are all truly iconic songs, performed impeccably.

They’re not the 80s songs I grew up with though. Icehouse. INXS. Men at Work. Crowded House†. Divinyls. Daryl Braithwaite. Kate Ceberano. Hunters & Collectors. Cold Chisel.

We need, I dunno, let’s call it 80s Kids in the Kitchen.

This is going to have to be my project, isn’t it?

Bruce Springsteen, Born in the USA, 1984 on Columbia

Having recently seen Deliver Me From Nowhere, which covers the period where Springsteen wrote and recorded Nebraska, it was interesting to come back to this album, which included some of the songs that came out of that era but did not fit that record.

It was so unavoidable, and so associated (so much for any irony) with a kind of patriotism, that I mostly avoided it (and Bruce!) in the early 80s – but I’ve come to appreciate all of him, even this one.

My copy—via private sale—is a 1984 Carrollton pressing cut at Masterdisk, and still has the original liner.
