Ancient of Days

This is a name for God in the Book of Daniel. This term appears 3x in the Book of Daniel (7:9; 13; 22). This term is used in the sense of God being eternal.

In the Zohar (the seminal document of Kabbalah that emerged in 13th century Spain) there’s mention of the Ancient of Ancients, & the Holy Ancient One. The Ancient of Days is the manifestation of the Ancient of Ancients within Creation. It refers to the most primary (“ancient”) source of creation in the divine will Keter (“Crown”).

In the 16th century Lurianic Kabbalah, Atik Yomin is systemized as the uppermost Partzuf (Divine “Countenance/Configuration”) in rectification of the World of Atzilut (“Emanation”) after the “Shattering of the sephirot Vessels.”

Keter of Atzilut acts as the guiding Divine motivation in creation, developing into 2 partzufim, Atik Yomin (Ancient of Days) & Arich Anpin (“Long Visage/Infinitely Patient One”). Atik Yomin is the inner partzuf of Keter, synonymous with Divine Delight, that enclothes within & motivates Arich Anpin, the outer partzuf of Keter, synonymous with Divine Will.

Arich Anpin is said to extend down all levels of Creation in ever more concealed mode as the divine substratum of everything. The Zohar goes into great detail describing the White Head of God & ultimately by Luria, emanation of its anthropomorphic personality of attributes.

In the descending realms explained by Luria, the Gulgalta (“Skull”-Keter Will) within Arich Anpin enclothes the Chesed (Kindness) of Atik Yomin, becoming the origin of the lights of the world of Atzilut; the Mocha Stima’ah (“Concealed Brain” – Chokmah Wisdom) within Arich Anpin enclothes the Gevurah (Severity) of Atik Yomin, becoming the origin of the vessels of the world of Atzilut.

The Dikna (“Beard”) of Arich Anpin constricts the infinite light originating from Atik Yomin in 13 channels of rectification to lower, relatively finite reality. The Merkabah text Re’uyot Yehezkel identifies the Ancient of Days as Metatron. Metatron is an angel in Judaism, Gnosticism, & Islam.

In Eastern Orthodox Christian hymns & icons, the Ancient of Days is sometimes identified with God the Father or occasionally, the Holy Spirit. But most properly, in accordance with Orthodox theology he’s identified with God the Son, Jesus.

Eastern Christian art will sometimes portray Jesus as an old man, the Ancient of Days, to show symbolically that he existed from all eternity. Sometimes as a young man, or wise baby, to portray him as he was incarnate.

This iconography emerged in the 6th century. Mostly in the Eastern Empire with elderly images, although usually not properly or specifically identified as “the Ancient of Days.” The 1st images of the Ancient of Days, so named with an inscription, were developed by iconographers in different manuscripts, the earliest of which are dated to the 11th century.

The images in these manuscripts included “Jesus Christ, Ancient of Days,” confirming that this is a way to identify Christ as pre-eternal with the God the Father. Later, it was declared by the Russian Orthodox Church at the Great Synod of Moscow in 1667 that the Ancient of Days was the Son & not the Father.

In the Western Church, similar figures usually represent ONLY God the Father. In the Book of Enoch, it states that he who’s called “Son of man,” who existed before the worlds were, is seen by Enoch in company with the “Ancient of Days.”

According to the Urantia Book, the Ancients (yes, plural) of Days are an order of celestial beings created by the Trinity to serve in groups of 3 as the rulers of the 7 super-universes of time & space. The Urantia Book is a spiritual, philosophical, & religious book that originated in Chicago, Illinois. It was printed sometime between 1924 & 1955.

Dybbuk

Also spelled dibbuk, meaning “to cling,” “to cling,” or “adhere.” This entity is a malicious, restless spirit of a dead person/spirit that “clings” to or possesses the body of a living person or is the dislocated soul of a dead person.

This isn’t a good-natured ancestral ghost. But an earthbound soul that’s been denied peace & seeks refuge (or revenge) within a human host. It supposedly leaves the host body once it has accomplished its goal. Sometimes after being exorcised.

The idea of the dybbuk has roots in Jewish mystical traditions. Specifically the Kabbalah, which gained prominence in the 16th to 18th centuries in Central & Eastern Europe. Earlier accounts of possession, like those given by Josephus, were of demonic possession rather than that of ghosts.

Traditionally, dybbuks tended to be male spirits. Because women couldn’t become dybbuk, they didn’t participate in gilgul. In Hebrew, gilgul means “cycle” or “wheel.” In Kabbalistic esoteric system, gilgul is a concept of reincarnation or transmigration of souls.

Sometimes these spirits were said to possess women on the eve of their weddings. Typically, in a sexual fashion by entering the women through their vaginas. Men & boys could be possessed as well.

In traditional Jewish communities, the idea of the dybbuk served as a socially accepted way of expressing unacceptable urges. Including sexual ones.

Within Jewish mysticism & folklore (particularly in Kabbalistic traditions) protective practices were also used to ward off malevolent spirits. One such practice involves attaching a mezuzah to the doorposts of a home. A mezuzah is a piece of parchment/paper written with a specific Torah verse.

While the mezuzah mainly serves as a reminder of faith & adherence to God’s commandments. It’s also viewed as a protective amulet against harmful spirits, including the dybbuks.

The Zohar, a foundational Kabbalah text, suggests that a properly affixed mezuzah can prevent such entities from entering a home. Also, Jewish folklore includes accounts where neglected or improperly maintained mezuzah were believed to make homes open to dybbuk possession.

In Lurianic Kabbalistic view (a major school of Jewish mysticism), it’s believed that every soul undergoes a process called gilgul (reincarnation) until it has made good all its spiritual flaws & completed its divine mission (tikkun).

A dybbuk is usually the soul of a great sinner. Someone who failed so utterly in life that their soul is deemed unfit for reincarnation or even for the stillness of the afterlife.

Because the soul can’t find rest or transition into a new body, it’s condemned to wander the world, a spiritual refugee. this limbo state between death & full divine judgment is sometimes referred to as the Barzakh in certain mystical texts. The dybbuk, being trapped & tormented, lashes out by invading a living host.

The possession is an act of desperation or malice. Once a dybbuk possesses a person (usually a woman, but not always), the host’s voice may change, becoming that for a dead person. Sometimes they speak in an unfamiliar language (it’s unfamiliar to the speaker/possessed person), or they recite profound, sacred texts they’ve known or seen.

The dybbuk speaks through the host. Often they reveal the sins that condemned it to wander or it accuses the host’s family of a concealed transgression. The host often suffers intense physical & mental anguish.

Because the dybbuk is a spiritual entity with a soul, its removal is an intensely religious act, an exorcism, that requires the intervention of a learned & righteous rabbi. Usually a rabbi is versed in Kabbalistic practices. The ceremony is solemn & ritualistic.

The rabbi, with a quorum of 10 men (minyan) & often holding a shofar (a ram’s horn), tries to reason with the dybbuk, at first, urging the distressed soul to leave in peace to leave in peace & accept its divine judgment.

If the dybbuk resists, the rabbi must use the power of sacred names & oaths. The rabbi may threaten the spirit with complete banishment from the Jewish people (a harsher spiritual punishment than eternal wandering).

The essential moment is when the rabbi calls upon the Divine Name to compel the dybbuk to exit the body. Often through the host’s small toe or finger so as to not cause the host any permanent harm.

As the dybbuk leaves, the shofar is usually sounded to break the spirit’s hold & symbolizes the final severance. The exit is then sealed with a prayer.

The Possession (2012) is a supernatural horror centered around the idea of a dybbuk. The story follows a young girl who becomes possessed by an evil spirit after finding an old box at a yard sale. Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Kyra Sedgwick star in this movie.

Shedim

Romanized name: Sedim; singular: Sed.

These are spirits or demons in Tanakh & Jewish mythology. Shedim weren’t considered evil demigods. But the gods of foreigners. They were envisaged as evil only in the sense that they weren’t THE Hebrew god.

They show up 2x in the Tanakh (Psalm 106:37 & Deuteronomy 32:17). In both passages, the text deals with child or animal sacrifices. With the translation of Hebrew texts into Greek, with the influence of Zoroastrian dualism, shedim was translated into Greek as daimonia with negative connotations. Later, in Judeo-Islamic culture, shedim became the Hebrew word for jinn.

According to 1 legends, the shedim are descendants of serpents, or of demons in serpent form. This may be an allusion to the story of the serpent in Eden as told in Genesis. Another view is that they’re the offspring of Lilith. This is from her union with Adam or with other men.

While a 3rd version says that God created them on the 6th day, starting to fashion their bodies but failed to finish the job because he was observing the Sabbath. Even after the Sabbath, He left them as they were to show that when the Sabbath comes, all work still unfinished at the beginning of the Sabbath must afterward be viewed as complete.

As a result, the shedim have souls like humans, but don’t have bodies to contain them. Yet a 4th story says that the shedim have their origins with the builders of the Tower of Babel. In this 4th story, these beings were divided by their motivations into 3 groups of which the 3rd & worst comprised of those who sought actively to wage war against God & were punished for their sacrilegious hubris by transforming into the shedim. Finally, the Zohar describes them as offspring of the demons Azazel & Naamah.

According to Rashi, shedim like lillin (We mentioned these entities in our post about Lilith.), has a human form. Although no human body. They eat & drink as mortals do. They can cause sickness & misfortune, follow the dead, & fly around graves.

1 is admonished not to do anything that could invoke the shedim, such as whistling or even saying the word: shedim. The shedim aren’t always malicious creatures. They can be helpful. Some are said to be even able to live according to the Torah, like Asmodeus.

Conjuring shedim isn’t necessarily forbidden. Depending on whether the theologian discusses the topic views such as summoning to constitute sorcery. Even if summoning shedim is an act of sorcery & thus forbidden, consulting shedim conjured by a non-Jew would be permissible.

In early midrashim, shedim are corporeal beings. They take the form of men, but have no shadow, 7-headed dragons. If a man could see them, he would see them he would lack the strength to face them.

Although he can see them by throwing the ashes of the fetus of a black cat around his eyes, or by scattering ashes around his bed he can trace their footprints similar to those of roosters in the morning.

To see if the shedim were present, ashes were thrown to the ground or floor, which rendered their footsteps visible. Shedim can shape shift. Sometimes assuming a human form, the Talmud tells how Asmodeus assumed King Solomon’s form & ruled in his place for a time.
