Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on the presidents of Ukraine and Poland to hold a "direct and frank conversation" amid the scandal over naming a Special Operations Forces unit after the "Heroes of the UPA."
Tusk wrote that he proposes a meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Karol Nawrocki, because "diplomacy has yielded no results" in resolving the conflict between the two countries. Tusk is likely referring to recent meetings between Ukrainian delegations and Polish officials.
"Before emotions destroy our solidarity, which was born in the face of the Russian threat. Cooperation is in the interest of both our states and nations, while conflict serves Moscow's interests," the Polish prime minister wrote.
Why are Ukraine and Poland at odds again?
On May 26, Zelensky signed a decree naming a Special Operations Forces unit after the "Heroes of the UPA." This sparked outrage among Poles. President Nawrocki even suggested stripping Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle — Poland's highest state decoration.
Deputy Speaker of the Polish Sejm Krzysztof Bosak called for blocking Ukraine's movement toward the EU until Kyiv "moves away from the cult of criminals and unblocks all exhumations" of victims of the Volhynia tragedy.
