Jewish conversationsWhat book would you recommend as an accessible history of Hasidic Judaism that's 300 pages or less? I was thinking of picking up Contemporary Uses and Forms of Hasidut, ed. Shlomo Zuckier (Urim) for a look at newer, Modern Orthodox, and non-Orthodox ways of incorporating Hasidic Jewish ideas (#neoHasidic) but this is a massive book, 516 pages
Oh, indeed. There are about a dozen large religions in the world, and hundreds of smaller ones. The two religions most analogous are possibly Islam and Judaism. I'm reading lately about the long history of Jewish-Islamic agreement through the lens of #Sufi mysticism.
Interestingly, #HasidicJudaism and Sufi Islam have meaningful similarities on several levels, although most Jews and Muslims might not be aware of them.
When Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi came to Mezeritch, the Maggid told him in the name of the Baal Shem Tov that melody is one of the paths of Divine service according to the teachings of Chasidism.

Agreed. For far too long most ideas within Chassidus were effectively not available to those of us in Modern Orthodoxy or non-Orthodox Judaism. It is beautiful that today there is so much more exploration of Chassidic ideas.
