Yo #writingcommunity! Following up on a post from @Monday, I would love to hear about where y'all get character names from.

When I need names from a specific time period I will often mix and match first and last names from contemporary baseball rosters and society columns. You get a nice blend of era-appropriate weirdness.

For myself, I suppose I'm a bit old school in that I have a specialized Word document I created. I usually have one per story and I'll keep track of all my characters in it, with a ToC so I can easily get to anyone's notes. It contains things pertinent to the story like background, magical powers, unique traits, relationships, etc. And I can add unique categories as needed.

@Monday I use Plottr. It's the first software I've found that I can actually work with - I can make it do what my brain wants, rather than me having to make my brain fit what the software wants. It's very practical, and can be visual as well - I use it for keeping track of my characters across a series of novels or individual books. Also Notes, and Places, and Tags. And plotting too though I don't use the templates - I follow my own.

Jules cleared his throat. “Two years ago, when I embarked on my own independent study of the alchemical sciences, I found myself fascinated by Philosopher Lockwood’s suggested non-research applications of alchemy, which he referred to collectively as ‘field alchemy.’ Imagine my disappointment when I learned that, in the seven years that had passed since the publication of Alchemical Science in the Third Millennium, no attempts had been made on the part of Lockwood’s peers and/or successors to actualize or build upon the theoretical frameworks put forth in the paper.” Jules paused, took a shaky breath—then summoned a crooked smile. “Largely, perhaps, because I was too young, too inexperienced, and too foolish to recognize my limitations, I took it upon myself at that time to test and further develop Philosopher Lockwood’s hypotheses. And I intend to demonstrate the results of that experimentation tonight.”
