[field note, Longwy, week 15] : dicovering Majorelle’s stained glass windows

We go with Guy to the Grands Bureaux to see the Majorelle stained-glass windows. The discovery is incredible — the windows are beautiful. A wonderful moment. The Majorelle windows served as a way for Guy to explain the different kinds of work once done in the factories. Right next to them lies a vast empty field, where one of the five factories of the Longwy basin once stood.

[Some information about our project]: From January to June 2021, together with Nabila Halim, we will carry out a photographic and sound project with the residents of Longwy and students of Vauban Middle School, exploring the theme of migration. This wonderful adventure is made possible thanks to the Caranusca Association and the city of Longwy

Next month will be the 40th anniversary of the “intensive discussions” in Santa Fe, NM, USofA, which gave #anthros the (in)famous Writing Culture text.

There are diverse ways to describe that moment. Many of those would make it a turning point. A pivot? Inflection point? The onset of the #CrisisOfRepresentation?

Any living #ethnographer can reflect upon (and through) that epoch.

Writing Culture

In these new essays, a group of experienced ethnographers, a literary critic, and a historian of anthropology, all known for advanced analytic work on ethnographic writing, place ethnography at the center of a new intersection of social history, interpretive anthropology, travel writing, discourse theory, and textual criticism. The authors analyze classic examples of cultural description, from Goethe and Catlin to Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard, and Le Roy Ladurie, showing the persistence of allegorial patterns and rhetorical tropes. They assess recent experimental trends and explore the functions of orality, ethnicity, and power in ethnographic composition. Writing Culture argues that ethnography is in the midst of a political and epistemological crisis: Western writers no longer portray non-Western peoples with unchallenged authority; the process of cultural representation is now inescapably contingent, historical, and contestable. The essays in this volume help us imagine a fully dialectical ethnography acting powerfully in the postmodern world system. They challenge all writers in the humanities and social sciences to rethink the poetics and politics of cultural invention.

@karinlag
That's a whole lot of work on the scammers part AND they only charged the authors a few hundred bucks instead of the two thousand I usually end up paying!

I'd happily pay an #Ethnographer to perform an ethnography of this type of scam!

As an #ethnographer, coming back to #freelancing is particularly rewarding as I get to work in #UXresearch. Here, our #fieldwork skills are valued and understood. More than in academia, at least in my experience.

Anyone who’s going through #LearningPathways in a field tied to #ethnography would benefit from interacting with #UX specialists.

So, it's been a while since I did an #Introduction #ConnectionList #TwitterMigration post where, I find interesting people for you to follow on #Mastodon, and use my reach to more closely connect the #Fediverse

Anybody coming up with Mastodon #data #analytic tools...

For instance:
Get a user's comparative toots-replies-boosts stats?
Do something similar for all members of a particular instance?
Who's writing?
Where are all of the boosts for a message coming from?

I'm about as far from a "quant" or coder as you can get, but curious about ways to imagine and describe this new collective community.

I already did an #introduction, but not officially. I am an American living in BC as a professor of #sociology. I am a theorist, by trade, and #ethnographer by necessity, and a photographer when no one is looking. My interests center a classic sociological question: how does the structure/culture of a place shape behavior &, how can these things be changed.

I study adolescent #suicide, suicide clusters, helpseeking, etc. I also study religious & political #evolution. And, etiquette, baseball,
